Charity Events - The Pan-Massachusetts Challenge

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Anthony:
I will also be riding in the PMC this year. What route are you riding?
I'm doing Sturbridge to PTown.
Everybody tells me the first year is the most memorable. This will be my second year, and I hope that it's as great an experience as last year.
Have a great ride, and good luck with the fundraising!

i think its garbage that there is such a high minimum balance you need to guarentee in order to ride. i personally and from Boston and would love to ride in this race however theres no way id be able to raise that much or pay for it personally since i am a broke college student. i'd probably be able to raise 200-300 from myself, family, and friends.
it might not be much but thats $200-300 NOT going towards cancer research....just stupid

Nick...
The minimum fundraising amounts for this ride are, I agree, high. However, even at the level they are at right now, there are over 5,400 riders registered for next week's ride. That is stretching the limit of what the state will allow in an organized ride like this. I remember from last year, that it was necessary to get a permit from the state to go on the majority of roads. Special provisions have to be made to cross the Bourne Bridge on the cape. Same would be true if we used the Sagamore. Unfortunately, there are limits on the number of riders that can be accomodated. So the limits go up.
Besides, the PMC is about fundraising, not bike riding. Yeah, we have a ride. (not a RACE) But the whole point is to raise as much money as possible. The emphasis is on fundraising, and that is what we care most about. ANYONE can be involved in the PMC, as a volunteer, rider, virtual rider (see www.pmc.org) or supporter. We work all year long to raise money, it is not a one weekend deal. For many of us, it has become a life-long committment. And it's hard. Sorry.
BTW...there are quite a few "broke college students" who ride the PMC. They make the same year-long committment to fundraising as the rest of us. And they are successful. It all depends on the motivation. If all you care about is a bike ride, it doesn't work. It has to be about finding a cure for cancer before cancer finds us (or you).
Become a virtual rider, raise the 200-300 bucks, and join in! Or make a donation. If not to the PMC, then to some other cancer research activity.

Since the fundraising requirement is a bit out of my reach, I'll be volunteering for the PMC. I am going to be helping with the overnight preperations and serving of breakfast at Mass Maritime. See everyone there!

This event could not happen without the help of the volunteers!! I started out as a volunteer a couple years ago, and decided to ride last year. Will be riding again this year.

I'll make a point of it!
Once again, I'll say that the volunteers and support people are the ones that make this work. An 18 year history is very impressive! Have a great weekend!

Hi,
I am a second time PMC rider who will be riding from Wellesley to Provincetown. Last time I rode the Sturbridge route to Ptown. I am riding with a relative who is a cancer survivor and novice cyclist who had some set backs in training.
How are the hills on the Wellesley route ? I have been told that they are a lot easier than those in Sturbridge but wouldn't mind getting other advice.
Riders - good luck with your fundraising and ride.
Thank you to all the volunteers

fiddleage: I rode the Wellesley route last year and had planned on the Sturbridge route this year so I checked it out to compare. The hills from Wellesley are significantly easier - the most noticeable being the one one right before the Dighton-Rehobeth stop (just after the routes merge). Its not to say its flat, but if you were comfortable with the Sturbridge route, Wellesley won't present any problems.
See you all in P'town!
