Southern California - Need help from Corona to Chino Hills

Anybody know how I can ride from the 91/Serfes Club (Power VW) back to Chino/Chino Hills. Taking car in for service on Monday and that no longer provide transportation home.

I used to ride from Butterfield to Corona all the time to get to the SART, but it's been almost 20 years. You've got to work your way over to Pine Ave. and there are a hundred ways through the cow country. There were some routes I would avoid because of the packs of dogs that would chase you down, or at least try to. Not only did the dogs run free, but the roads suck and are not maintained very well, if at all.

Kind of figured Pine Ave....but that road is really narrow and will be searching for alternatives. Hopefully with the departure of a lot of the "cows"/cow country, there will be fewer dogs to chase me down:thumb:

I think I'll just bring my Garmin Nuvi (for my car) and turn it on as I leave VW. That woman speaking to me will initially panic when I don't get on the 91 West, but she will "recalculate" pretty quickly. I guess I better carry 3 or 4 tubes/co2's as agree those roads are in bad shape.

So the cows are gone huh? Wow, when I first moved there in 1990 the roads were always closed, flooded or something, so we took the back way to Corona all the time. For a year or so, the 71 was completely closed between Euclid and the 91 and I would have to give family coming from OC directions through the cow country...almost impossible. Taking your Garmin is a good idea, she will be irritating to listen too, but useful. Good luck.

I have an old (1992) Caltrans bike map that says the 71 is legal for bikes, with the 91 freeway shoulder legal for bikes to/from Green River to provide access.

Since then. they have converted the 71 to a freeway from Pomona to the SB/Riv county line and to an expressway (with a much wider shoulder than previously!) from there to the 91. Even after that, the "bikes must exit" signs remained on the westbound 91 at the Green River ramp and the the eastbound 91 at the 71 ramp. Either the intent was to not allow cyclists on the 71 and they forgot about the signs on the 91, or they left the signs there to comply with a law that prevents existing routes for non-motorized traffic from being severed by converting a road to a freeway. However, the ramps for the southbound 71 at Euclid have signs saying cyclists are prohibited, which would be inconsistent with the latter view.

But with the current construction on the Green River ramps at the 91, I have no idea what is the current official status regarding bike access. I've never asked the question of Caltrans simply because I'm not in that area, and because this is probably not affecting huge numbers of cyclists.

Two lane roads with low traffic, riding through the cow fields. (there are definitely still cow fields.) Sometimes the smell is bad - then you pass the sewage treatment plant and miss the cow smell.

The roads are a bit rough in places, but this is gonna be much safer/better than taking the 71. Stop at the golf course to refill water.

Have fun out there. I havn't got a flat tire out there yet (knocking on wood), so I think bringing multiple tubes is overkill.

Since I didn't know the street names on that route (although I knew it was there and have ridden it), I was going to suggest 6th street east to Main which will turn into Hamner/Milliken and will cross Riverside which you can take west into Chino. My way would get you there, but you would have had to ride farther. Rooftest's route looks more direct. Those roads aren't any worse than most others. I agree that multiple tubes might be overkill.

I would change a few things to that route. Where River Rd splits off Archibald to go over to Hellman I wouldn't go that way because the roads are old, narrow, and very poor. Instead stay on that section of Archibald going North because they just finished rebuilding it(it's very wide and new) for the new homes that went in that area. Then turn left on Schliesman/Pine because this is a new wide street also. Go a couple streets west to To Hellman and go North(right turn), this section of Hellman is also new and connects to Kimball(also new) Take Kimball to Central and stay off Pine Ave. Plus Pine is going through some remodeling and is close right now in that section(between Hellman and Euclid).
I take this route twice a week to get to Chino Hills.

Try going Serfas Club to Palisades to Green River Road. The last time I was there it was legal to ride on the 91 freeway shoulder east from the Green River Exit to the Hwy 71 exit, then north on the 71 or Chino Valley Expressway. The reverse from south on the 71 to west on the 91 to Green River Road was also OK. The 71 was a bit tight for bikes but the 91 was like having an 8 foot bike lane all to yourself. I've done it both ways.

I haven't been of the 71 in years, but when I lived right there, just the thought of even walking on the shoulder of that road would have sent shivers up my spine. The section from Euclid to the 91 used to be a death trap, has it changed that much?

It is now a 4 lane freeway. You cannot ride that section anymore. Also if someone would have road it 3 or 4 years ago when it was a two lane crucible, over the other routes supplied. I would say they are nuckin futs.

Although I looked at the Google satellite view - riding through suburbia just won't be the same as taking the 2-lane road past all the cow farms.
