This is the Specialized Small Fry helmet, allegedly for kids age 3-7...on my 2 year old boy:

This is with the foam liner removed and the adjustable ring opened wide. Either he's got a big noggin or the helmet shape just doesn't match his head shape. I guess I'll try another brand, depending on what's at the LBS where I bought this. I think they also have Bell helmets, which is the brand his older brother wears fine. Well, he doesn't get to ride on his new (used) Kettler trike without a helmet - I'm starting good habits early - so I will attend to this tomorrow. Too bad, he was so thrilled with the yellow!

I really hate it when helmet makers rate their child/youth helmets by age; head size is all that matters. Just like smaller bikes -- 12" are designated for 3-4 yrs., 16" for 4-6 yrs., etc. (these are sized by the wheel). A tall 3-y-o could easily fit a 16" bike; in fact, my 5-y-o nephew rolls an 18"!

I get a lot of requests from prospective bike buyers, wanting the right size for their kids; every single time, I will ask, "How tall is the child?" And every single time, I get told their AGE! It's as maddeningly dumb as having to explain endlessly that training wheels are not outriggers, that the bike is SUPPOSED to 'wobble', otherwise the child will never learn to balance.

I think the Bell helmets work better for us folks with the bigger noggins, as you put it.
I always felt like the Giro helmets were floating on top of my head.
Though trying on helmets with a young one is trying, not to mention getting them adjusted.
