Bicycle Mechanics - Wheel help

Seeing as this is the most unbiased subforum here goes. I'm looking to pare down to 1 or 2 bikes. As much as I like Campy I'm thinking about using some old Deore XT, 8 sp era, parts. The frame is a 1999 Waterford RSE-11 with cantis and 130mm spacing and 1" quill headset. The only thing I don't have in the parts box are wheels. I was thinking about some Ultegra hubs with either CXP-33 or OP rims. The bike would see mostly road miles with some mild trails. At 135lbs I'm not a clyde so 32H hubs should more than do the trick. Any comments on my possible wheels before I pull the trigger? Thanks

Not that you'd actually need it, but put your wheels through spocalc and see what tension balance you get for the rear wheel spokes, then buy the appropriately different gauges for DS and NDS.

Ultegra/Open Pros have for years been the standard to which everything else is compared. You can generally pick up a pair for around $250.00 so that's a bargain. In fact, that's cheaper than I can buy the individual parts. They aren't the lightest, most aero or most anything but they're a good journeyman wheelset that you'll never have to apologize for owning.

+1 with the further recommendation that CXP-33 rims are also very good and wheels built with them are almost the same cost as with Open Pros. You can't go wrong with either rim.

I had a set of wheels built by Wheelsmith on 32H Dura Ace hubs with CXP-33 rims laced 3X with Wheelsmith XL14 spokes that were retired after 30,000 miles and were still in usable shape. They never broke a spoke and NEVER needed to be retrued.

I currently have CXP-33 rims on Chorus 10-speed hubs with DT 14/15 db spokes, also 32H, 3X with 6500 miles on they are also still perfectly true. These came from Colorado Cyclist.
