I have an old road bike with a 9speed freewheel and someone has put on a long cage rear derailleur. I have a 7speed freewheel I would like to install to utilize it's large 34 tooth ring. The bike has friction downtube shifters. Will this work and if so what do I need to check and do? Or could I just switch the largest cog with the 34 tooth cog off the older freewheel? Thanks! The bike is a Miyata Pavea 77 with the 42 or 44cm frame,

Hmmm. Can you post a picture for us?

1. If it's 9-speed then it's a cassette, not a freewheel. They attach to the hub differently and require different (special) tools to remove.

2. A long cage rear derailleur may or may not work with a 34 tooth big cog. It depends on exactly what rear derailleur you have.

Grouch is correct. If you want lower gears, look for a 9 speed cassette with a larger cog. Or go smaller in the front with a compact or triple. :thumb:
