Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Madison sure breeds stupidity!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This link http://www.madison.com/tct/news/stories/295129 somes it up pretty well. My question is why would you not lock up your bike if it cost $8000 dollars? This next link http://www.madison.com/tct/news/stories/295576 is refreshing, the thief who probably responsible for many thefts here in madison gets bagged. I 'm never amazed by the stupidity of criminals, in this case he would have been riding without incident if he would have been riding with lights. This kind of stupidity reminds me of the pot smokers who travel down the highway in their bug plastered in Dead Head Stickers, and then wonder why they are pulled over and arrested with pot in tow. I wan't to know what that $8000 dollar bike was for god sakes!
an $8k fixed-gear? sounds like insurance claim padding to me...

The term 'for god sakes' is nonsensical. Perhaps you meant for god's sake?

Well it could be 8k... a BMC track bicycle frame runs for about 10k.
And I know of at least one example of a 4.5k single speed/cross bike.
and ya'll're a bunch of pedants.

There was a posting on CL about this from the owner, but I can't find it now. It actually had a photo of the bike. The bike was a very persuit-style carbon track bike that was pretty tricked out with matte black carbon everything. I don't remember decals on any of the parts, defintely none on the frame, and I don't know exotic carbon track bikes enough to ID it from a little CL photo.
Was leaving an uber expensive bike unlocked (for even a minute) a good idea? No. However, I am guessing that at this point the owner probably has realized that, so I don't see much point in trashing on the person's decision to run into the store ATM quickly w/o locking up. My guess would be that the bike is either in one of the lakes, in a back alley, or in Chicago or Mpls or futher by now. As a former bike theft victim, I hope it gets recovered.

I should also point out that your article that you linked is incomplete and late.

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison police officials say a $8,000 racing bicycle was briefly left unlocked and unattended on the city's east side, and was promptly ripped off.
But someone came to the rescue of the bike's owner.
Police officials say the bicycle has only one riding gear, with no brakes, and top components, tailored for sprint racing.
Officials say when the bike owner's went into an east side store to use an ATM, a thief swiped the specialized bike.
"He (owner) was thinking this bike might not be any use to a thief who didn't know what it was," police spokesman Joel DeSpain told 27 News. "So what happened is, somebody only rode this bike a couple of blocks and ditched it. There was a good samaritan, a good citizen who found the bike, didn't exactly know what it was, but knew it had value."
DeSpain said the good citizen took the bike home, and reported its discovery to officers.
The cycle was returned to its owner.
Sounds like he was...

Did the article mention anything about the pot smokers who travel down the highway in their bug plastered in Dead Head Stickers, and then wonder why they are pulled over and arrested with pot in tow?

It doesn't appear to... I know we were all hoping for such a lovely slur against East Madisonians but it was not to be.
Yea, there were shouts of "Get off the street longhair!" and verily there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth and then everyone went home to pack a bowl and rattlecan their Deep-V rims.

I saw this very bike last year (I assume it was the same bike, since how many would be in existence, let alone in Madison?) being walked by its owner (again, assumption). My immediate thought was, that bike is going to be targeted for theft eventually. Not a question of if, but of when.

Bucky stole it. He's now bombing down Bascom with no brakes or foot retention.

Since this was an in-store ATM, the owners might object to that.
