Hey all, new to the forum and to the world of dedicated cycling. A friend of mine recently donated me an old beater bicycle that had been given to him. It's quite an elegant bike, and I'm looking forward to doing some restoration on it. I found what I think might be the maker's name, but it is torn. The only letters not effaced on the label are "APAN", which made me wonder if that was just Japan, as in it's place of manufacture. A few inches above that label "JC Penney" is painted in gold. I have included the best pictures I could take of the above mentioned information. Anyone have any idea who made this thing?

Looks like a 70s bike boom bike from JCPenny's. Best used today as a range target.

The rust is below the paint, so I wonder how much damage there is. Surface rust isn't a problem, but I worry if the OP is going to have catastrophic bike failure if the rust is too deep.

I have a JC Penny bike sitting in the garage right now. "Echelon" model, in a light metallic blue. My brother wanted to restore it, and although there is no rust on the frame, the general disposition of its construction leads me to believe it to be a death trap. What little I could find out about JC Penny brand bikes was a general consensus of "compleat and total crap".

I concur with the suggestion of using the bike as a range target. Heavier ordnance preferred...
