My wife and I are looking forward to a summer ride from Zion, Illinois (WI border, right on the lake) to the tip of the thumb in Door County, Wisconsin. We're hoping to hug lake Michigan as much as possible and we're just trying to evaluate good bike friendly routes/roads/etc. we might use. Is the "Lake Michigan Cycle Tour" a good route or are there better alternatives?

I'm not sure offhand, but there's a guy here named Catfish that you should drop a line to. He's pretty familiar with routes coming into and going out of Wisconsin, and he's really friendly. Send him a PM and/or email, and he'll get back in touch with you pretty quick. And P.S.- tell him Koffee says hi and get your butt back on bikeforums too! :p

There's an organized ride in August I believe that basically goes from Milwaukee to Door County. Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's "Scenic Shore 150". I did it a few years ago, I might have the map laying around yet. I'll see if I can dig it up, it was a pretty nice route.

The "Circle Tour Route" is not the best for biking. There are plenty of roads with less traffic that are also closer to the lake. Get a Wisconsin Gazetteer and plan a route. All of the rural roads in WI are paved and generally good for riding. There is a bike trail that will take you along the lake for most of the way through Milwaukee.

Thanks for the advice -- especially the "through Milwaukee" tip about the bicycle trail. I will keep my eyes open for routes closer to the lake.

I did the scenic shore 150 this year and it was incredible. I am definitely doing it again next year!
