Commuting - Can you see me now?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Just wondering if anyone else looks simular when they commute?
I also have a head light and 3 red flashers on the back of the bike in addition to the reflectors and tire flies.
"The goggles, they do nothing!" :D
I need to get me one of those now that I am on the streets more...

Yea, my new commute is over 5 miles of country road with no shoulders and a 45MPH speed limit. It has several "blind curves." It's really dark too. :) The rest of the ride is on city streets with wide shoulders and street lights.
I figured it was a good $15.00 investment.

My vest was free from work, as was the reflective leg band I put on my right ankle to keep my pantleg out of the chainwheel. I also have reflective piping on my jacket, reflectors on my back fender and on the back of my helmet! Tastefully reflected!
I think the motion of the reflective leg band is a real help, as well as having the helmet reflectors, they're more in the line of sight of most drivers.

Pretty and safe!
Hey, N7CZinMT, if you don't see other bicyclists when you are riding, it isn't because of the weather in Montana.
... you might be scaring other bicyclists away!

Hey now... :) be nice... ("It ain't easy being cheezy!")
I actually saw another cyclist, well, a guy on a bike on my commute into town yesterday morning. He was dressed in black, no reflectors and a dark colored bike. I didn't see him until he passed between me and the moon casting a shadow.. :D
I wonder if it was the "UNI-BIKER"???

I usually see people like this on the streets:
I wear a vest like that most the time while riding, especially when I'm on the highway. Amazingly I've almost been run over in broad day light while wereing the vest. But it keeps people from hasseling you too because you look like a bike cop.

To be honest, with the way most people drive in Houston, I sometimes think it's better to NOT be seen by oncoming traffic... I always wear a strobing read LED on my messenger bag however.

Oops, guess I'm repeating myself.. sorry

You are looking very reflective. But you should add a bunch of reflective tape in the rear vents of your helmet and all over it. This is what I do and it seems that when I move my head from side to side or up and down it draws the attention of a motorist. In those sketchy back road situations with no street lights and no shoulder.
Stay Safe and roll right on over old man winter. ;) :)

I commute in a velomobile, so have to rely on what I can stick on the bike. Some pictures of the bike at night can be seen by visiting the link in my signature. I also use a front facing eternaLight (white) and rear facing eternaLight (multi-colored) both in blink mode. Seems to work very well as many people have told me they spot me from over a mile away on long straight-a-ways on dark stretches of my commute.

Where did you get your stylin' vest? I've only seen the X-ugly crossing guard ones.

Well, here is the link to the ebay auction of the one I got:

Below is a link to "Safety Vests" on ebay:

There is a large selection of vests. Even reflective vests for your dog!
Good luck, hope you find one that will work for you.

Hi John,
Thanks for that idea too! I had not thought of that. I also am going to add some reflective tape to the fender and sides of the frame.
Looks like possible snow for the commute in the morning. :D

I also use flashing red L.E.D.s on the back. I must say your velomobile looks interesting. Thanks for the link.

Geez..I've had a few looks in bikeshops and didn't see them.
Didn't occur to me to go to industrial saftey supplier.
Thanks for the link though-I may go for the strobe vest...
I'm a weight weenie and hate putting flashers with HEAVY batteries on the bike.

Hey Jeff. Happy I could help. Please post your opinion of the strobe vest. I was also looking at that one with interest when I found it in my search results for you.

Bob
My biggest concern is rear visablity which I recently improved by adding a set of those bar end LED lights to go with the Cateye TL600 just before I left Bakersfield. Good golly those crazy little bar end lights are bright, and already had a motorist tell me how well he could see me, and he claimed he saw me over a mile before he got to me. I also use reflective tape on the helmet and backpack when commuting as well.
