Has anyone heard if the air quality makes it unhealthy to exercise outside? I was hoping to get a ride in.

I commuted to work all week, with no issues, and I wasn't even coughing.

Word is that yes, it is unhealthy to exercise in this air. News broadcasts in the Sacramento area are calling for folks to stay indoors whenever possible. Air quality indices measuring particulate matter and ozone were above 150-200 yesterday - in the unhealthy to very unhealthy range. Check out http://www.spairtheair.com for more information.

That being said, I've been riding around in this stuff, but at reduced intensity and duration. I definitely feel it, especially after a ride. Probably not a great idea...

The Sacramento area -- including Vacaville -- is calling for unhealthy air quality. If you have issues with your respiratory system, don't play outside.

Yesterday was ridiculously smoky; I couldn't see the Vaca Ridge from my house, and the sun was very weak. Today was much better, but still campfire-smelling. I went out about 8 for a 25 mi. ride during which I exerted myself. No problems.

Now if the issues caused by the smoke are cumulative, I may have problems down the line, and that's a different issue.

Check your local air quality -- maybe try www.sparetheair.com

according to my air-quality specialist wife, the effects of smoke and pm 2.5 are both acute and chronic. meaning that some exertion may not cause more than temporary discomfort, but repeated and exposed heavy breathing may lead to increased long-term bronchitis risk...
I'm using the smoke as a excuse to strength train...in the gym

The immediate bay area is looking better now:

Here is a 2-day air quality forecast for selected cities across the state:
http://airnow.gov/index.cfm?action=airnow.fcsummary&stateid=6

Weather forecast is for cooler weather and west-to-east winds over the weekend, so air quality will be better than the past few days. Coastal areas will have the best air.

Sacramento area particulate-matter air quality has been "moderate"—all day in some areas, and most of the day elsewhere. Go to http://www.sparetheair.com/aqirealtime.cfm and click on the PM monitoring station nearest you. This shows an hourly graph of the day's readings.
