Anyone know some good places to ride along the Rail Trail in Cape Cod? Generally, I just ride however far I planned on along the trail, but I want to discover some nice roads/rides right off of it... any suggestions?
For those of you who would know, I usually get on the trail around Brewster/Harwich.

behjaug,

Here's a link to the rail trail map. Click trail map & you'll get a PDF. http://www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/southeast/ccrt.htm

The Cape Cod book & map that bktourer mentions are worth getting. I ride mostly above Orleans when I'm on the Cape. Almost any of the secondary roads are fairly low traffic & worth checking out. Even 6 above Eastham is pretty manageable.

My favorite ride is to take the Rail Trail north to the end, then take a right onto Lecount Hollow Road, left onto Ocean View Drive, then left onto Calhoon Hollow Rd. From there I take 6 up to Race Point in Provincetown.

On the way back, I take 6A south (or west, whatever isn't north or east), then back onto 6 and then Old Country Road to West Main in Wellfleet. Back onto 6.

In North Eastham take a right onto West Rd which turns into Massasoit. Then right onto Herring Brook. From there you could take 6a back to Brewster, or get back on the Rail Trail.

Take a look at Google Maps & my route should make some sense. Have fun!

Or just pick up one of those ubiquitous tourist brochures for the town you're in, pull the street map out of the middle and stuff it in your pocket, and go exploring. My wife and I spent a couple days in Eastham last month. One day we went from the rail trail to the Salt Pond Visitor Center and then down the bike path from there to Coast Guard Beach and back, then north up the road to Nauset Light, then back to the trail. Another day we went to the Bay side of Eastham and did the complete Tour de Beach, visiting all the town beaches using roads along and near the shore. This was all very pleasant easy riding with some great scenery, mostly on rural and residential streets with little traffic.

I first rode on the CCRT this past Saturday and it's really nice. I'm now on it every morning around 7:15am, starting at the Lecount Hollow Rd. end if anyone else is in the area. It's smooth and well-maintained (I've passed people sweeping sand off the trail every morning).

Sunday was interesting. Me, headed south. Several thousand others, headed north for the Pan-Mass challenge. Ended up turning around after about 10 miles, just to have the experience of riding in a group (something I've never done before).

Eastham and Wellfleet are beautiful and fun places. Get off the trail and stay overnight somewhere. The ocean beaches have seaweed right now but the ponds (lakes) are glorious. My favorites are Great Pond and Duck Pond in Welfleet. Wellfleet center is cute. Another speakable outer cape landmark good for bikers is the "North of Highland Campground" in N. Truro. Best on the cape and it's right on a bike trail to P-Town.

Yesterday I rode from S. Dennis all the way to Newcomb Hollow Beach for a swim be fore returning the way I came. About 56 miles roundtrip. I highly recommend it, just be careful around the traffic jams with little kids, and teenagers who want to gossip. They will block both lanes! AGH! There are lots of bike rental places and places for food and drink.
