Mountain Biking - Older Gary Fisher

Anyone ever heard of a Gary Fisher Al-1. was told that it was about 8 yrs old. Was thinking about driving a ways to take a look, but any info you all could give me would be appreciated.

Hello: I bought it new in '89 for $750 from a shop here in Phoenix. It was kind of an entry level bike for Fisher at the tine. It came with Deore components and above bar shifters and the Evolution 1.250 headset. I trail rode and raced it for almost ten years and never had any problem with the frame. Of course i've changed almost every component at least once over the years.

Its a good all around handling bike with a 70.5 degree head and 74 degree seat tube. Mine is the large size, 20 inch I think, with a shortish top tube. The tubes were at the time considered over sized but now look common place. The frame material is 7005 Series Al. The color is what Fisher calls Glacier Green, or what most people call teal green.

Just be sure to examine the frame closely for cracks, it is getting on in years.

Thanx for the info Threesticks. I bought the Bike, after checking it out thoroughly. He had taken very good care of it. It has new Richey Vantage comp rims with Wilderness trail bike Grease Guard Hubs. The hubs I haven't heard of, but they look great.

Was told that they were top of the line. Rigid frame and fork which is what I was looking for. Components are Suntour XC Comp. They look nice and operate quite well, but I will proably up grade since the rest of the bike is in pretty awesome shape. The worst thing about this bike is the frame has a few scratches. Ok quite a few. But I didn't find any cracks, and I got it for $100.00. I think it was definitely worth. Thanx again.

For $100 you can't go to far wrong. I loved my Gary Fisher. It had XC Comp on it, too. They work well. The rear der is still kicking on my Sis' bike. Just keep an ear cocked for odd noises, know what I mean?

the WTB grease guard hubs struck me as being nice. My wife's XO2 front wheel has that hub with Ti spokes. You might keep the hubs when you ditch the bike, just in case. I love those 'tie dye' Ti spokes, but they're so expensive I never did get around to doing her rear wheel.

A nice test is grab the seat>stem\head- foot to bb and push- 1-3 inch play- thats the tensile flex- 2 yes..4, too much riding. Both sides, the right will have a different play. But even stationary you can feel the resistance, flex-creaks..hmmmm..sqeeky,sqeeeky.

The only noises that I have heard so far is the brakes squealing. That has only been on a short ride I will check it out more on a longer one today. Thanx everyone.

That would be the cantis. Shimano has some new cantis for 04 that I am going to try. They won't be available as a part until spring. Pauls makes some nice cantis; but the price is nuts.

toe in the brake pads- steel wool scrub the rims- SQEEEE...hate that noise-my mtb is 23lb and the lighter the bike gets, the louder it is seems. Need new?- Koolstops.
Salmon seems to be a good choice :D

My Fisher had Avids, his prob does too. They love to squeel.
