Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - fluids

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was having a discussion with my coworker, who is also a cyclist about fluid intake, he mentioned water is good but your body really needs something to replace the depleted vitamins and minerals. So that got me thinking about what to fill my water bottles with. So my fellow clydes/althena's, what do you drink on your rides?
My commute is only 26 or 28 miles, round trip, so I drink water.
If I'm doing a century, I have a bottle of water and a bottle of whatever sports drink is free at the rest stops.
just water for me as well.

Short rides (20-30 miles): plain water
Longer rides: water + Nuun (http://nuun.com/).

For long rides, I use water and Accelerade.

I drink water, but I never go more then 20 miles yet. I'd imagine a sports drink would give you some sodium back, and others talk about bringing a banana or a sandwich with them. I once added a scoop of protein shake mix to a bottle of water once. It did not make me feel tired, but maybe a little full.
I thought it would take several gallons of water to get water poisoning (flushing vitamins out).

MMMMmmmmmm water!
All I ride with is water. Ill drink a sports drink when I get to the house if I have one there.
Mainly water for myself on rides of 30 miles or less. Above that, and depending on the heat I'll drag a Clif shot blok along.
The last supported ride I did I consumed watered down gatorade at the rest stops, and while riding just water. Gatorade while riding just doesn't go down as easy as water.

I have exactly the opposite experience. I tend to drink Gatorade on any ride over about 10 miles. I grew up exercising in summers of Houston, Texas: 90-100 degrees and 90+% humidity every day. I think every event I participated in featured Gatorade refreshment! I mix my own from powder and tend to water it down a bit more than the bottled stuff. I wanted to like Nuun, but every flavor I've tried has been absolutely wretched...
water in the 1st bottle and watered down sports drink in the 2nd
I did a VERY hilly 60km yesterday drank 2 waters had to stop to buy a sports drink as I was consistently cramping up I found that worked for me
Just water up to 30, but beyond that I get the non-flavored Heed especially if it is really hot and humid.
You can tell I just got my bike today because I heard fluids and automatically thought this was the beer thread. :)

With the heat and humidity of the Gulf Coast, I boink pretty fast with just water. I'll usually take Gatorade with me, along with a bottle of water. If I drink the Gatorade, I follow with a drink of water. Plan on buying the powder and really need to add another bottle cage, but my frame pump only fits in the space it would, so need to get a mini pump. Or, maybe do as my son does and buy a Camelback, but I hate anything on my back when I'm riding distance.
Over 40 miles and I'll do water and watered down accelerade. I usually drink a liter of weak accelerade mix before my ride. then a beer and a liter of water afterwards.

On short rides like the ones I've done recently, water. On longer rides such as a century, water and diluted Gatorade. On tour, water and green tea. In the winter, hot tea in my insulated bottles.

Rabbitlike, eh! Sorry, can't resist, here. ;) Boink and bonk mean different things:innocent:. When you ride too far for your water or nutrition, you bonk. You go to jail for boinking in public though. ;):innocent::eek:

Reminds me of a classic Neil and Dennis the Gym Rat moment:
"Neeeeil!"
"Dennis, long time no see!"
"Welcome back. When was the last time you were here?"
"I haven't been to the gym in a couple of weeks. Since before Christmas."
"You'll get it back. Start coming regularly and throw on lots of plates on the machines. Remember, pain don't hurt. A wise man told me that."
"Yeah, Patrick Swayze in Roadhouse."
"Great movie. So what have you been doing?"
"I was on a four day bike tour with Neil over Christmas."
"Yeah, where did you go?"
"Our route was Philadelphia to Doylestown to Bethlehem and then home."
"Did you wind up in Georgia?"
"Very funny. After the tour I did some more riding, including riding my age on Saturday. That was tough. I was with Neil, and at the end his headlight failed. I had to call out road obstacles to him because he couldn't see them."
"Pothole!"
"Yeah, like that."
"Bear!"
"No bears in New Jersey. By the end of the ride I was seriously bonked."
"Whoa Neil! I knew you could do it. How old was she?"
"No, bonked means a lack of energy in a cyclist from a lack of food."
"Oh. But what I thought of can tire you out too."
"If you say so."

Water and watered down gatorade. Occasionally I will stop and get a pepsi for some quick sugar and caffeine.
Water only on my 10 mile commutes. If I am going on a 3 or so hour ride first thing in the am, I will sometimes use diluted gatorade.

Add me to the water and diluted gatorade crowd. I use a 50/50 water/gatorade mix on any ride over 20 miles or if the temperature is above 80.

Water here. Anything more than that? Water and a clif bar.
Shorter rides (10-15 miles) it's usually just water. Over that, with the TX heat, I mix in some Crystal Light re-hydrating stuff. Just found that and I really like it. Plus, it's sugar free which is good for me! I also wanted to like NUUN but just couldn't. I had bought the $20 multi-flavor pack and ended up giving it away.
< 2 hrs = Water
> 2 hrs = half strength sports drink
my century this weekend ... cookies and bratwurst at the 60 mile "lunch" stop. No kidding....
