Tandem Cycling - Newbs - Just bought a Tandem

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

After going through all the great advice found in this Forum for the last 4 weeks we finally brought our first Tandem home today. A brand new Burley Duet loaded with some real nice components. We are lucky to live near TandemsEast in New Jersey - Mel realy took care of us. We test road a few and settled on this Burley. Mel and his crew ensured the bike fit perfectly, made adjustments and swapped parts until everything was right.
These things are cool.. wish we would have done this years ago.

Cool, We also have a a Burley. Ours is a Rumba. I believe it is the same frame as your bike but ours has lower end components. This is our first tandem but the steel frame rides so well! I forgot how nice steel rides. Is your bike 700c?

The Frameset is the TOSA Frameset Vera Lite 7000 series Frame and black steel Cro Molly Fork
TruVativ bars, Cane Creak , Shimano- cranks, dr, shifters, Avid brakes.
Seems like a nice place to start. Looking forward to learning about all the technology available.

Duet is a great choice/quality.
The stoker's handlebars are WAY up in the air, but the seat's pretty low. I don't want to diss your new ride, but it looks kind of odd to me. Did you intentionally set up the stoker for a very upright position?

She is a bit verticaly challenged.. After a number of test rides and a number of adjustments and a few part swaps that is what she needed to be comfortable. Like I said.. Mel at Tandems east is an expert, just looking at how she was sitting he knew what she needed. The bar setup is very similar to the way Mel's bike is setup for his wife.
We're also new to tandems. And my wife, at 4' 11", is also shor - er - "vertically challenged". "Keep your stoker happy" seems to be a universal rule, and if that's what it took, more power to you. :thumb:

Yea man.. Keep your Stoker happy!
I am quickly learning that all my years alone on my 1/2 bike lend nothing to my Captain duties! I need to learn better communication skills.. its amazing how a little communication like.. “COASTING” or “RIGHT TURN” really enhances the stoker experience...
