General Cycling Discussion - Is brand X better than brand Y?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Just a general question...
When it comes to MTB components, are there any brands that are better than the rest? Or is everything pretty much equal? I was thinking of getting some new wheelsets, but wondering about other components as well.

It depends...
Yes, it does "depend" on projected use, durability, value for $$ paid etc.
"Better" is often one mans pain and other mans pleasure. ;)

Ask a general question, get a general answer. ;)

If you can be a bit more specific what it is you're comparing, no doubt you'll get more opinions than you can shake a mouse cursor at...which may or may not help.
I wasn't expecting much. It actually was just supposed to be a general question. No more, no less. You guys are free to provide your opinions on which parts you like best, based on quality and performance, and prior experiences with other brands.

OK, here's a few things you could provide to narrow it down:
Intended use (XC, Freeride, DH, AM, etc.)
Type of bike (Singlespeed, geared, FS, hardtail, rigid, etc.)
Riding style (Smooth, basher, jumper, etc.)
Rider Weight/Size
Product Level (Entry, Mid, Racing, Top Shelf, etc.)
Brand Preferences (If any)
Continent (the one you live on)
Your favorite color ;)
