We currently own one Electra cruiser and I just sold an Electra Rockabilly Boogie last year. The quality is/was good on both of these bicycles. FWIW.

I considered the Amsterdam, but I decided on the Townie. I'm very happy with that choice; the Amsterdam just felt not quite finished to me, and I love my Townie.

I got my mother-in-law on to an Electra Townie and she absolutely loves it. Now, if I could get the LBS to split the commission with me when I sell a bike for them, things would be great.
Electra makes great bikes. High quality, and they stand behind their product. That being said, I haven't seen an Amsterdam in person.

When I was shopping for a new bike, I really liked the look of the Amsterdam, but I couldn't find one to ride in person. I tried other Electra bikes and decided that their forward pedalling style wasn't for me. I don't know if the Amsterdam has the same geometry in that respect or not, but it looks like it may. It made it pretty much impossible to get up and stand on the pedals, which, combined with a lower number of gears than a lot of bikes, made for a bad combination. That said, I love the look, I love the features. The Amsterdam was out of my budget, but I ended with a hybrid to which I've since added a rack, fenders, new handlebars, and lights at a price tag that may have bumped me back into Amsterdam territory. If you can find one in person, take it for a ride. I hear nothing bad about Electra as far as quality goes, but not everyone likes they style of bikes they sell or the riding style their bikes promote.

You can stand on the pedals; the trick is to switch out the Townie handlebars for bars similar to those on the Electra Rat Fink. The Amsterdam's handlebars are far enough apart that you can do similar things. It's like standing up on a regular cruiser. You don't need to do it much, due to the overall geometry, but you definitely can if you put a mite of effort into it.
I definitely agree that the bikes are designed for a certain riding style, and that it may not suit your fancy. I happen to dig it, but I might not have.
