Hi all,
I live about 60 raven miles from Death Valley and am close to the base of the Sierra Mountains. We are able to ride almost year round unless of course it's raining, maybe three or four days out of the year, or when the wind is howling so bad you can't even stay on the bike...
We have cool Winters, mild to warm Springs and Falls, but our Summers are a true test for the toughest riders. It could be 80 to 100 degrees in the early morning all the way up to 120+ degrees by mid afternoon.

From some of the posts I've been reading, this seems to be the place I've been looking for and am looking forward to reading more.
Take care and ride safely.

Welcome Fosilfuel..I passed through your town on the way to the Death Valley Ride by Planet Ultra last March 1.. I recall Ridgecrest, before the big descent into Death Valley. Recall bike trails for road bikes throughout the town.
Rode up to Scotty's. It snowed up there at 3.000 ft.
My question.Suspect moutain bikes has a slight preference? You ride over to the valley once a day and back up the climb, you are in pretty great shape. What a ascent. 4.000 ft?

Not sure if you are referring to Death Valley, but it's quite a long distance from Ridgcrest by car or bike. I would love to be able to ride over there and back in a day, and yes, I would be in great shape. Most of my riding consists of a stretch of back road that takes me from Ridgecrest to Inyokern. It consists of some rollers with a couple of tougher climbs. If we leave Inyokern and head North towards Pearsonville on Hwy 395, we can ride up a road known as Nine Mile. It's the toughest climb we have, not sure of the total altitude gained.

I used to live in Canoga Park back in the early 80's. Are you going to do the Death Valley Double this year? Enjoy your riding.

Fosilfuel...Might ride Death Valley 100..In competion for my desert spring ride is just to go out to Joshua Tree and ride with some biking friends.
Do Death Valley 100, will it snow again on March 6? Actually they rarely go north towards Scotty's...Usually they ride out south approach to Death Valley.
It was an enjoyable ride except for the dusting of snow.
If we do, let you know. I would recommend the ride.
The Death Ride in May?...They ride out of Death Valley and pass through your area in the course of 1 day? What you must be 50 miles from Death Valley. With the climb out of the valley, that is a challenge.

cyclezealot:
I am almost sure I'll be riding the Death Valley Spring double cause I just got permission from the boss. Now all I have to do is train and drop about 5 or 6 pounds.
As for snow you just never know. I like the idea of riding up to Scotty's Castle. I've never ridden a bike up the hill but have been through there several times in a car.

My big goal for this year is to train and compete in the Huntsman Games in Utah.
Anyway, I'm off for my Saturday ride. Enjoy your weekend...

Fosilfuel..I did enjoy the hill up to Scotty's...Sure a long climb but low grade. Planet Ultra's ride they have lunch at Scotty's...Usually they go out towards the south east towards the entrance, where there is nothing, really. I feel lucky that they went to Scotty's..Hope it doesn't snow..
Wish I were doing it again..Don't see how..Other plans conflict..Can't do everything...I recommend the ride..Lots of fun... Good luck on the 6 pounds...After having last summer off, I need work on like three times that amount..
