what states are you looking in? If I go to portland or seattle craigslist main page, then click on "bikes" under the "for sale" header, then type "tandem" into the search box, there's always something...

If you tell us what states/cities you're looking in, someone can double-check and tell you what they see

Craigs list is where i found our tandem. It's a crap shoot. In the Atlanta area sometimes you may find 3 or 4 at a time or go for months with nothing. Tandem shops often have used bikes on consignment. Check their web pages & ebay.

Ebay, but would have preferred Craig's List / local. But we were careful and everything went well.

The problem with ebay & out of town stores is the shipping costs. Adding $200+ in shipping usually spoils the good deal.

I actually just got a tandem delivered that I picked up from craigslist. I'm in LA and the couple drove from SD to drop it off. Everything worked out great.

Do a Google search for craigslist. One option is a search of craigslist, type tandem. The actual search turns out to be:
tandem site:craigslist.org

I found ours on Craigslist in Portland. I just searched and came up with 7 or 8 posted in the last couple of days.

I'd say this is high bicycling season for most of the country. Folks are using the toys they've stored all winter. Maybe see more sales in spring and fall. Just keep checking, and Ebay always has something if ya get desperate.
Good luck

Other problem is ya never know the true condition unless the photos are highest quality and very upclose. Sure you can MAYBE send it back, but at the cost of shipping and possibly having to repackage it....local is better if possible.

Other problem is ya never know the true condition unless the photos are highest quality and very upclose. As long as you know what you're looking for, do consider buying it sight-unseen from a further away location and you might get a killer deal that outweighs the shipping cost. As long as the seller is willing to take it to a local bike shop to inspect and pack it, you can have a commercial shipper come to the bike shop and truck it away, or get www.sportsexpress.com (http://www.sportsexpress.com/) to do the whole job for you. Get recommendations on these forums for trustworthy nearby bike shops if this makes you nervous. Pay the shop with a credit card and talk to them over the phone to make sure the seller's assessment of its condition is honest, and if it's not, you're stuck only with the shop labor fee.

See http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=302410 . We got our Burley on eBay (it was also listed on Craigslist) all the way from Florida to Boston for $50 bike shop labor plus $100 shipping from DHL.

Where did you learn about that "site:" feature in Google? I'd never heard of it until now, but WOW what a useful feature! I wonder what other cool things are hiding deep in the dark corners of Google and oter common programs?

I bought my tandem off craigslist. It was about 4 months of constatly keeping an eye on craigslist and probably 50-75 sketchy looking ones.

I got a tandem off of craigslist when I was living in the Seattle area. It was exactly what I wanted, in great shape at a good price, and just a couple miles down the street. But Seattle has a pretty active craigslist. Other places, you could wait for a decade for the right bike in the right size at the right price.
