Foo - Just spotted in my backyard

It's definitely a bobcat. Most of the other photos didn't come out very well (it was getting dark, and the cat wouldn't sit still ;)) but it had a short tail with black tip and white spot at the very end, and black spots with white "eyes" on its ears. All typical bobcat markings.

Kasia saw a larger adult bobcat in the yard several months ago, but this was the first time I've seen one.

I was in the garage tinkering with the bikes, when she burst in and said (in kind of a screaming whisper) "there's a big, wild cat in our backyard!" I scrambled around, grabbed the camera, and took about 50 photos, most of which are too blurry to keep.

It was really cute to watch. It chased the frog around the yard for about 5 minutes before eating it. It then silently disappeared into the bushes.

Too cool.


How big was he?

I don't really know -- bigger than a normal house cat, for sure. At one point it arched its back and stretched (the way all cats do) and you could tell it was a lot of cat, long and lean.

This photo is blurry (1 second exposure) and grainy (ISO maxed out) but you can see the tail and ear markings, and get some sense of its proportions.

We saw a bobcat while kayaking down the river. It was just walking along the bank. I was grateful to not be up there at the moment.

it's so sad to see wild creatures lose their fear of humans. This will certainly lead to their extinction. :(

So true :( I had a stray cat give birth in a small heated house I built for her just this past winter, I noticed that the 5 little kittys she gave birth to stopped running away when I came out to feed them, so I started to jump out and scare the crap out of them last week! when they run and hide I quickly set the food bowls down and run inside! Sounds cruel but Im sure it will help them survive all the "bad" humans that will try to do them harm in the future ;) I dont want to take them to a shelter as this is kitty season and they will most def be put to sleep :cry: I feel they have a better chance with some nut jumping out and scaring the poop out of them! :lol:

I see bears every day. Half of them are dead though.

We're supposed to get bobcats and the like down here, but i've even yet to see an Alligator (Central FL). The only exotic wildlife (between Tourists and those weird long legged birds) i've seen have been armadillos.

Not kidding about the bear's either...in fact, its more commonly known as a Raccoon - the smallest member of the Bear Family!

I see bobcats and armadillos regularly on my daily ride. When I'm coming up on them they just kind of stroll off the path and stare at me.

Nah, its funny what a person can do when the time comes ;) Im constantly amazing myself with the differant situations Ive handled that I originally thought I couldnt! :lol:

I was amazed when I saw a racoon (even after I saw it for the third time) in the middle of the Kensington section of Philly! If you know Philly you know that a racoon shouldnt be anywhere near Kensington! unless its buying crack! :lol:

Definitely prettier than usual Floridian Alligator backyard surprise. Harder to run away from too.

You never know where something like that will pop up. Do you live near all that protected acreage (Paradise Creek)?

I have land in SnoCo where I set up a Moultrie IR60 digital game camera I bought from Cabelas for $299. It's pretty interesting seeing the things that go bump in the night. I even was curious to see what was eating the moles I killed with my illegal ( thanks to yer soccer mom neighbors) mole traps. I left a mole about six feet in front of the camera, and caught a couple minutes of video of a turkey vulture eating it.

If you're interested, you can access cougar sighting reports via WA Department of Fish and Wildlife's website. Woodinville has had it's fair share.

I'd take a picture of the bear poop in my backyard but I don't think it would be very photogenic.

Bobcats are cool but their big brothers/sisters, the cougar is not so cool. We had one drag a dear through town a couple of years ago..
