Electric Bikes - Road Ebike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Most of the e-bikes I've seen are with mountain bikes. Are road bikes too fragile for a kit system? I'm thinking about making a ebike with a bionx system but dont have the bike for it yet. I already have a road bike and like the drop bars and would like my next one to have them too, any thoughts?

No reason why you cannot mount an electric kit on a road bike. If looking for a hub motor, make sure you get a 700c kit for your wheels. However, I recommend a chain drive like Currie or Cyclone so you are not hindered by the limitations of a hub motor for your road bike.
A chain drive will let you peddle as fast as you want to assist the drive while letting you use all your gears. On a hub motor, if you peddle faster than what the hub can rotate you basically cap your top speed. A chain drive is also a better hill climber. The downside is a noisier ride compared to a hub motor.

Can you send me a link of a chain drive system or is it a diy thing?

Just get a hub motor for the front wheel if the front forks are strong enough. The thing should be pretty fast on a road bike, maybe more range also.
Hub motor installation is simple and some are made for 700c wheels. Chain drive is more complex and Cyclone is the only chain drive I've heard of. Run a search to find them. Heres a guy doing a conversion with a Cyclone

For hub motors, remember to get a wheel with 130mm drop out since road bikes have 130mm drop out while most other bikes have 135mm drop outs.

I think most builds are looking for suspension due to added weight. In the past lead batteries kinda wrecked nice, light road bikes. Now that lithium batteries have come along we'll probaby see more kits on road bikes.
