Hi Everyone
I know Ullrich has retired, just a question I have about him.

What is it in his stroke, ability, strength, technique, or a mixture of all of these, that Jan Ullrich never stands up when he's climbing?

Thanks for your insights.

Lots of heavier guys develop more power seated. I use a lot more oxygen standing up so i sit 90% of the time. Indurain didn't stand a lot, much more than Ullrich though.

strength.

Indurain too.

and I would imagine that gravity - when standing up - would impact a heavy rider more than a lightweight.

Next time you watch him look at the gears he is pushing. The guy is a powerhouse and had an ability to absorb so much pain. There is one video some where that had close up footage of his legs and they are gigantic. Almost freaky.

Stud. Makes ya hate the rules....

Total train wreck but a real human being. Lance made him seem vulnerable but he never *****ed about it or blamed it on anyone but himself.

What a shame,

Michael

Getting out of the saddle takes a toll on heart rate in direct proportion to the size of the individual. It's much easier for a 135 lb. individual to dance on the pedals than a 160 lb person. Did you see the size of ullrichs ass? Lifting that alone would take an effort.:):)

Is this another one of those 'nature break' discussions?

I've seen Ullrich out of the saddle while climbing, he just didn't do it so often, that's all.

So for a 200-pounder, that would take an even higher toll on the heart rate.

I'm sitting down from here on in. :thumb:

yeah, he only seamed to do it when really under pressure and on the verge of cracking. When in control, he was always seated.

"Ulrich is churning a MASSIVE gear."

Its a shame that out of that generation he was so close both in terms of ability and palmeres, and yet now so far away from Lance in terms of public appeal. They were all juiced, some were just better at keeping up the charade.

I think if both lance and Ullrich were not juiced the Kaiser would have had many more TDF wins. Lance had far superior doctors.

Jan did, on the odd occasion stand up whilst climbing, however as he usually climbed in a high gear he was better off sitting down. You can generate more power by sitting when climbing. As a general rule of thumb though you lose acceleration, however as Jan never accelerated at any great speed this wasn't a problwm for him.

I think if they got into a fight, Ullrich would knock Lance the f**k out.

I like this quote
The guy is a powerhouse and had an ability to absorb so much pain.

Interesting, I am about 200 lbs, and yet I stand a lot. It letīs me use my upper body power, or so it seems. Besides, some of the hills I have to go up, if I don't get out of the seat and get over the handbars, I will flip backward.

But I will admit, if it is a real long slope, I sit down and grind it out.

basso rarely if ever stood when climbing, when he did it was il awkwardo looking. just a matter of preference.
