Is this a good deal on a built rim for my use?
Will it fit my bike?

I blew up the Alex rims and my Jamis dealer upgraded me to some Shimano rims at no cost to me. How old is your bike? Jamis should cover the rims being crap, or at least my LBS did.

I personally think that wheel is only a slight upgrade, if any. I think you could do better for the money.
I am in the process of upgrading my wheels, and I have found the best deal on this site. http://www.coloradocyclist.com/home/
So far I have ordered my front wheel, a CXP33 rim with Ultegra hubs, 14g DT spokes for $140 shipped.
Definitely a better deal than anything at performance.
Best of all, the wheel is Hand Built.
Shipping at performance is going to be over $20 for the one wheel (I almost ordered an open pro).
For that price ($160+ after shipping) I would get somthing like this:

or this
http://www.coloradocyclist.com/product/kit/SSFCEUDS
and even after shipping it still may be cheaper for a better wheel that is hand built.

I upgraded my wheelset with a Mavic A319/Shimano LX M585 combo from Rocky Mountain Cycle, they are moderately heavy but tough enough for a 235 lbs commuter in Chicago: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=170223232930&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=007
I also use Specialized Armadillo tires. My bike accepts a 700 x 35 size and they float over filled potholes easily, bigger is better! I can still maintain a 17 mph pace while commuting with no problem if I keep the air pressure at max rated levels.

I have also learned how to true my own wheels and check for spoke tension. I haven't broken a spoke since the change, and I don't have to drive over an hour to the LBS to have the wheels worked on.

The wheels may be cheap but they are very poorly built and the service is real bad

Really helpful to click on the sheldon brown site Tom posted above. Just scan and you will learn important stuff.
Spacing 9listed on teh site):
126 old roadies-6 and 7 speed
130mm -8 and 9 speed
135mm hyrids and mtb's
See, I can't type worth a darn but I can do it!
I built my own wheels by reading his site. Lots of good stuff like taking off cassetes, saving $20 a pop at teh shop for 3 minutes of werk!:thumb:
