I just purchased a Dahon Speed D7. I purchased it locally off of craigslist from a lady that bought it last year but had only ridden it once. I feel I got a pretty good deal ($250) since the bike really is new and shows no signs of use.

I'm not sure whether it is a 2006 or 2007. How can I tell?

I took it for its first "real" ride today down to the LBS to pick up a bike lock and some other goodies. The round trip was about 5 miles which I rode both on the street and sidewalk. I must say I'm quite pleased with the ride and funtionality of the bike as a whole. I've been riding a road bike (see sig.) for the last four years and this is my first folder. I must say it is pretty nice to simply jump on the bike, flip-flops and all, and just ride without having to change clothes, shoes, etc.

The bike shifts well and I find the gears adequate for the hills in this area. I live at the top of a hill about a 1/3 of a mile long with a 15% gradiant. I found the bike pretty stable, I always felt in control even on the steep descent from my house to the main road. I was able to use the rack and bungee cord that came with the bike on the way home and it was excellent, tightly securing the bag of goodies I picked up. The bike folds quite easily. I like the magnet that keeps the wheels together when folded. It is pretty easy for my to carry and I'd guess the weight is around 25-30 lbs, no weight weenie but definately managable.

The old lady saddle that came with the bike will be the second thing to go, as I already removed the "dork" disc. Next I'll ditch the kick stand and reflectors to save a few grams. ;) I plan to install a flashing LED to make myself a bit more visible.

All in all a great bike and I'm well pleased. P.S. these folders definately get a lot of looks and coment. The guys/gals at the LBS thought it was great!:thumb:

I have a D7 and could not be happier. The stock seat suits me down to the ground. Old lady? I think not. Comfort and regular usage come to mind. You want to slide your scroutm along a razor blade, go right ahead. That seat is golddust. :)

Like riding on air. Some days I forget if I'm staning or sitting it's so comfy and natural.

Nice review, but why ditch the kick stand and reflector, two extremely useful parts! If yours is the pea souip color, it is 2007.

The color is blue, more of a dark blue. The reflectors IMO are worthless as I can never really see them that well on other bikes and the rattling noise they make annoys me. I'll be using a much more visible LED in place of the reflectors. The kickstand won't get much use with me since the bike will be folded when not ridden.

I find my road saddle very comfortable and have completed numerous centuries on it. No offense was meant to those that like the saddle, the "old lady" part was a joke. As I mentioned I ride a road bike so I'm used to much less padding and prefer a stiffer saddle that doesn't feel like an air bag. Saddles are naturally a matter of preference and this one just doesn't work for me.

Slide your scrotum along a razor blade... Best Quote Ever. Makes me want to start a bicycle-punk band and call it scrotumblade. First single "115 grams of pain".

That midnight blue colour maybe a 2006. My D7 was a great bike.

If you ditch the kickstand you'll have scratched paint within a week.. :twitchy::twitchy::twitchy:

Is yours a 2006? Mine is the same color and has the same graphics.

I haven't posted in quite some time, but my cobalt blue 2006 Speed D7 is STILL going strong. It survived three NYC winters (although I never took it out in the snow). I see that the new Speeds ('09 and '10) arer well over $400 (How much did I spend back in 2007? Like $290, and that inlcuded tax and shipping from brandscycle).

Although I ended up making no modifications, it still rides perfectly and has required only minimal
tune ups. Couldn't be happier. :thumb:
