Tour de France - Spare Bike - Bike Fit?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

When a rider wrecks his bike, the team car pulls up and yanks a bike off the roof and the rider is away seconds later. But... Does the bike fit? Bike fit is a very special and unique thing, do they grab "any bike" off the roof or does EVERY rider have his own spare bike(s) that is custom fit to him?
Inquiring minds...

It would be my guess that they probably have 2 sizes....big and not so big. They get you back on the road and you deal with it the best you can. Then again, I am no mechanic so this is a WAG on my part!
Your GC guy will have a bike damn near identical to his main ride. Likely true for your other jersey threats as well. Then they probably make up a couple more bikes in average sizes for a guy to just make the stage on. It's not particularly common to swap whole bikes as it is just a wheel swap (puncture, warp, broken spoke, defective cassette, etc).

All the contenders have spare bikes that are dialed in for them.

Wouldn't that be nice?
They should make a short film about an average amateur cyclist who somehow has the support staff of a pro. There would be motorcyles and team cars following him on his evening 30 mile ride.
Dreams, right?
