I did not know if this load was going to be too bulky to fit or not, but the truck is on empty (has been for over a month) and I'm not about to shell out a bill to tank it. Tie down straps rock.

McLean is like a biking backwater around here as far as I can tell. I avoid it so haven't been out there in 4-5 years. There must be some recreational bikers out there but when I go it doesn't feel like a place to bike to the store or anything. Maybe they'll let you stay in Arlington and bike commute out the the job site. Last time I biked there I was with a car free guy who knew the area and all the shortcuts and it still sucked. Cutting through back parking lots and singletracking along fence lines just brought the modern urban planning concepts into sharper focus.
McLean covers a lot of area. There are parts of Tysons that are technically McLean, but just across Rt 7 is Vienna. I live right in Tysons on the Vienna side, and I can get to the WO&D quite easily (and safely) using a number of different routes..
Other parts of McLean are closer to Arlington. It really depends a lot on where you end up.

In some ways, life is better at my house thanks to the higher price of gasoline.
I have always been conservative and most of my local transportation has been by bicycle for many years. My wife and children, however, have never embraced that lifestyle. They were the soccer-mom set. They ate many of their fast-food meals in the car as they went from piano lessons to soccer practice, to swimming and on and on. Every day was a blur of driving from here to there and from there to here and everywhere in-between.
My wife finally noticed that all the driving was costing a lot of money. She finally stopped driving so much on weekends for all day shopping and doing silly unecessary errands.
Most importantly, she has slowed down being a taxi driver for our son. FINALLY, finally. Today, he desparately wanted to go to the game center with his friends. I refused to drive him as did his monther and as did the other kids' parents.
Guess where they are now. Yup - they went to the game center BY BICYCLE! Halleluya!

You live in Tysons in VA and you bicycle? Isn't that Dick Cheney's neighborhood?
Does BMW make bicycles?
You must be a pretty rare bird in your neighborhood, my friend. Be sure to wear blaze orange when you ride by Dick's house.

About that bill Allen, that truck will just over heat, break down, need tires or something, ride that bike,
I don't hate trucks, but do try to avoid them, cars,,, I hate.

Actually we live on the Vienna side of Rt 7. As for McLean, they sort of have this attitude of superiority that really puts me off. I find downtown Vienna much more hospitable and more useful (it has the WO&D, 2 bike shops, 3 grocery stores, a bakery, a library, tons of restaurants and other misc stores, etc), all of which I can easily and safely get to on a bicycle.
I have no idea where Cheney lives or lived :innocent:.

The VP house is at the Naval Observatory in DC. McLean is near where the CIA has a facility but the CIA started downtown in a Naval place near state the site of the OLD Naval Observatory in Foggy Bottom. Maybe that is the source of the confusion. But the joke is that Cheney is always in an "undisclosed location" which could be Tysons why not?
Next time I go out to McLean I'll keep my eyes peeled for transportational cyclists.

all i did was stop driving because it was too expensive to fuel my big bad suv :P
now i can spend that money on burritos and food to fuel myself to get to and from work and around town.
I consider myself one of the lucky ones. I have a natural aversion to driving. I didn't even like it as a teenager.
We drove more when we were living in NC but now that we're in grad school and in an urban area, there's hardly any reason to drive, except to go out to see our parents in the 'burbs.
