Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Anyone ever convert a mountain bike for long distance riding. I have one converted with all the handlbars lights, Brooks 17 seat and rack. Have been using it for years and it works but everyone says I need a touring bike to get the job done right.
I've used my 40 lb Walmart Y-frame mtn bike for distances as long as 200 kilometers.

For us mortals though a road bike makes things somewhat easier.

I do think that a road bike is optimal for long rides. ;) But hey, whatever gets you from Point A to Point B in the manner that suits you.

An MTB with slicks and (preferably) close ratio cassette is OK for me. I'd prefer a real road bicycle, however.
i'd put drop bars & slicks on it, then you're pretty much good to go.
i think flat bars are what stop most mtn bike cyclists from covering long distances.
any bike can be the right one.

What do you mean flat bars are what stop most people from covering long distances. I have flat bars on it. I am an older rider and can not take being bent over like Lance Armstrong all day. I just cant. I do have slicks and bar ends and racks but was just wondering it I was doing the right thing. 26 inch tires though
