I may be the least mechanically inclined person on earth. I have been reading the threads on using a good flashlight as a headlight and think I want to go that route. However, I cannot find a clamp to mount it to handlebars or even the top bar of my bike. Anyone have step by step instructions or good advice about how to address this problem?

You can also look at some of the photos on my site to see various configurations of TwoFish Lockblocks and Bikeblocks as used to hold flashlights on handlebars, helmets, etc. See my signature for the link, if interested. ;)
Make sure you look closely at the difference between Lockblocks and Bikeblocks. They're not interchangeable and you'd definitely want the Lockblocks for handlebar use, just as Yan suggested.

By the way, iamjethro -- the recommendation of the TwoFish Lockblock assumes the use of a fairly small-diameter flashlight. Do you have a particular flashlight that you've already identified as the one you want to use on your bike? For instance, if you've got a D-cell flashlight you want to use, I take back my recommendation of the Lockblock since it's better suited for a flashlight using cells more along the line of AA or CR123A, etc. The Lockblocks probably wouldn't do well with a large diameter flashlight. I figured I'd better put that out there since I don't see that you mentioned the particular flashlight.

I have looked at Coleman Max and UltraFire Cree C3. I also have found this holder http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.8274. Any advice on it?

I have the 8274 dealextreme holder--pretty handy for only $1.90. I paired it with one of the 9 LED flashlights (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3206); good enough to be seen. Openning for flashlight barrel is approx, 15/16"; 7/8" for handlebar (plus has a shim).

Try a cheap route: 2 steel hose clamps from an automotive store. 1 around the flashlight, and 1 around the bar. try it on a cheap flashlight first.

This is also what I did, it actually works, very well, you can get it nice and tight. The only flaw is that it can scratch your handlebars, however a quick wrap of electrical tape over the area will protect you.
I use a 9 LED flashlight from walmart, actually much brighter than my halogen that was actually designed to be used on a bike.

I'm gonna try the flashlight route right away. My Schwinn halogen flashlight just isn't bright. I'm going with an LED flashlight. I kinda thought that a snorkel keeper might do the trick to secure the flashlight.

Bungee cords or even duct or metal tape also work for the frugal cyclist who has enough self confidence not to care what other people think.

I believe I suggested before, not sure, to use 2 steel hose clamps from the automotive store. 1 goes around the flashlight and the other goes around the handlebar. You would thread the flashlight's hose clamps through the handlebar clamp.

I did that to fix a tooter horn to the handbars. I painted the hose clamps matt black but it still looked rather ordinary. If you don't mind the appearance it works fine.
