Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Sheldon Brown's website no longer?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The Sheldon Brown website no longer works for me. Has it been taken down since he died? It worked about 2 months or so ago for me. I tried on two different computers and got nothing. If it's down for good, it's a shame. A ton of info there.

It worked earlier today, so I'm guessing it's still up.

I tried on 3 different computers in my house. Nothing. Tried pinging it, nothing.
any ideas?
tried pinging it? unless he was running it out of his basement, lots of hosting companies, etc. deny pings at the firewall, for fear of simple icmp flood attacks.

try viewing it through proxify.net that way you can tell if it's it your computer/connection or the actual site.

So who actually owns the domain and is paying to keep it online? Should we collect money to make sure it is up for generations to come?

the domain is owned by a shop, i don't think you have to worry about that..

And the shop has reaped huge benefits over the years from the traffic Sheldon's site has brought them. There's no way they'd take that down - it'd mean they'd fade into being just another bike shop. The pity is that I can't imagine anybody will put in the sort of time he did to add more to it.

I haven't read Sheldon's site in awhile but it seemed like a lot of articles were from contributors at Harris -- Sheldon wrote a lot of it, but not [I]all[I] of it. I think that even if no one carries on his work, someone over there should perhaps do a re-organization of the site (keeping the original, of course!) to make it a clear anthology of Sheldon's work. I have found his site always a little disorganized: it was always quicker for me to google "site:sheldonbrown.com sdfgasg" instead of clicking through his site.

I was disturbed to discover today that Harris has begun to remove the obsolete information from their parts pages.
I was going to add a link on one of my pages (http://backroom.hardsdisk.net/sr300.html) to Harris' obsolete Sugino (N/A) Bottom Bracket information only to discover that they had removed all specifications except for the two spindles that they still sell (http://sheldonbrown.com/harris/bottombrackets.html#sugino). All of the information was there yesterday.
Fortunately, I have an archive of the previous page. If you have archived any of Harris' or Sheldon's pages I suggest you back them up and keep them safe.
