Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Dude in Mpls Star Tribune

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Awhile back, there was a great article about a dude who lost an enormous amount of weight by cycling. He had to have a special bike made and rode only at night to start. Eventually, he decided to move to TC area because of bike culture and trails.
I got my bent trike and started reading here after the article was published. I'm not quite in the Athena category, but do need to lose weight and improve my physical condition. The article was so inspiring and motivating for these goals.
After finding this forum, I had to wonder if the article was about somebody here. For the life of me I can't find that article, even on Proquest. So, if you're here or someone knows who he is, please let me know!:)

I think the article you want is at: http://www.startribune.com/lifestyle/health/16782826.html
For an inspiring Podcast on weight loss, go to: http://www.podcastdirectory.com/podcasts/6833 and scroll down to "Cycling and Weight Loss." The setting is Portland, Oregon; but there is a lot in the interview to get you out of your chair and onto your bike. The things said in the interview are very realistic and not at all puffed up with things that promise too much.

He wore size XXXXXXXXXXL pants ...
Holy cow! Reading that, I was stunned it took him 3 hours to ride 2 miles. That's just outside the realm of my experience and comprehension. I can see why it took 3 hours after I remind myself that he weighed 500 lbs and could only walk 9 steps at a time before taking a breather.

Thanks, twobikes! The Strib supposedly keeps articles for only two weeks; I sure missed the search words.:o
FYI, the link to Scott Cutshall's blog is http://istanbultea.typepad.com/. It starts out in French, but don't be discouraged--there's a quick transition to English.
Best to all the rest of you!:)

Maude,
Do listen to the Podcast I linked. I do not live in Portland, but do get there several times a year for meetings, etc. KBOO has a bike program once a month and their past broadcasts are archived in Podcast form. In case you have not used Podcasts and assume they are only for people with an iPod, the files download as MP3s you can play several ways, including your computer.
I am glad you found your article. I googled a couple of words you had in your post and the article popped up right away. Some days Google seems to give different results with the same words. An interesting way to go at it is to search Google Images by means of someone's last name. If their picture appears anywhere on the Internet, you will get their image. Clicking on the image takes you to the web page where the image is stored. It is an interesting way to learn about people who share your family name. Sometimes you can even make contact with them through the web page.
Since this is the sub-forum for Clydesdales and Athenas, I want to share a bit about weight and losing it. Two years ago I was about 224 lbs. I started biking and watching what I eat just a bit. Last year I managed to ride 3,500 miles. Over 18 months I dropped to about 203 lbs. I had been stuck at 203 lbs. for months until recently. My doctor put me on 20 mg. daily of Simvastatin to reduce my cholesterol. A low cholesterol diet goes with taking a statin drug. I have eliminated or greatly restricted some personal favorites: ice cream, chocolate, cookies, red meat, cheese, snack crackers. After beginning the daily statin dosage I noticed my appetite did not seem as strong. The combination of slightly less appetite and eliminatng some favorite foods has brought about a weight loss of about five pounds in the last fifteen days. Technically, I am now a Clyde emiritus at 197.5 lbs., but I am waiting a while to declare that officially, lest my weight suddenly shoot back up over 200 for some reason.
From 1964 to 1966 I was a student at Concordia University in St. Paul and rode a 3-speed bike all over St. Paul and Minneapolis.
