Mountain Biking - If your a dad and you take your Kids

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Make sure you have the tools (or have them carry it) to loosen nuts other than allen....or you have to fix flats with the wheel still on the bike. Didn't even think of it until today. I carry enough to take care of nearly any situation for my bike, but if the tube had not been fixable we/he would have been walking -even with a new tube along. It was a pinch flat, but the holes were small enough to patch.

This is probably why he had the flat-or the trail back down. He is 9.

Thanks for the tip JR.

BTW, we took our son on his first off-road singletrack experience yesterday! (he's 3). Sure it was just the "REALLY EASY" trails, but he loved it!

Also took him to the BMX track on Sat. They've recently redone the track and the jump faces are soooo steep. He had trouble getting to the tops of them. He could roll the rhythm section pretty well. I'll wait a few months to take him back. He liked it, but he's not strong enough yet.

(Trying REALLY hard not to push him too much!)

The only extra tool you may need is a good 15mm wrench, which will fit in a hydration pack.

That's cool. I wish that my dad would go riding with me. :( He never really liked the fact that I love to mountain bike.

I should carry some tools with me. Have not been walking home yet. Oh wait, except for that time when the crankset stripped off the bottom bracket, causing the left arm to fall off.

Thanks guys. I am very fortunate that all 3 of my Sons and Wife enjoy riding. It is sure nice to be able to share family time doing something we all enjoy.

I agree JR,

You don't see a lot of families out on the trail, but whenever I do, I just smile. The time that they're kids goes by so fast, I don't want to waste a minute of it. If I can instill in my sons heart a joy for family activities, the outdoors, and exercise, I'll be very happy.

Ride as much as you can while they are young, because they will become too busy with other activities when they get older. My son rides with me occasionally, but he plays so much ice hockey is can't get out many weekends.

I love riding with my son. he has been riding with me for the last 2 years and is getting stronger and faster.

He also Love to do road rides with me as a stoker on our tandem. we tried that in the woods , but it did not work out very well. there just was not enough mass on the rear wheel with him in the back.

All very cool. I get sick of kids stuck in front of a t.v playing a Playstation all day. I try to get friends children to join me and my lot on rides, they hate the idea of it but once they are out they love it. Been lucky and never had any breakages so far.
