Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Co-Motion Mazama?

My brother called me the other day all excited that he had found the perfect road bike for me. I think he may be right, but was interested in hearing from anyone who owns this bike or has at least ridden one. The price is a bit steep at $2895, but their color options are nothing short of staggering. I'm sure I'd go with panels...maybe grey with black panels :D. It's not like I really need a 4th bike, but I could imagine enjoying this one in the stable. Anyone have any first hand experience with this bike? Seems like a great choice for we clydes and super-clydes.

I purchased a Mazama back in December. I have put 2,000 miles on it thus far without a single problem. I even ran through a horrible pothole the other day unscathed (by the way, I weigh 340 lbs.). I opted for the 40 spoke Velocity Deep-V rims, and they are still as true as day one. The disc brakes are another plus for trying to stop a moving Clyde.

The reason I went custom was because of my height. There were no stock bikes available for me. Is there any particular reason you are going custom?

One of the owners (Dwan) spoke with me at length on the phone twice about the bike before I approved the shop drawings. I am very satisfied with their customer service.

I assume you have a local LBS that is a Co-Motion dealer? You go there to get your custom fitting, and to pick up the bike upon delivery.

I'm sure that your bike fits you brilliantly and is very comfy to ride but in those photos it looks like an afront to all that is bike proportioned. Looking at it I'm picturing someone about 8 foot tall with arms that don't quite go past their rib cage, basically a human t-rex.

I keep having to go back to look at it as it's just so odd looking.

Mazama is a fraction of an inch short of 7 feet tall. He's a big feller. What's scary is those are 700c wheels :eek:

If I'm making things out correctly in that schematic, that's a 67.24cm c-c seat tube and a 110mm reach stem in front of a 65cm c-c top tube.

I'm 6'6" and just fit on a stock Cross-Check 62cm frame, which has 61cm top tube and a shortened reach 90mm stem. That puts Mazama's Mazama at around 2.3 inches longer in the cockpit than mine. Seems about reasonable for somebody around 6'10", with a not-too-agressive riding position (much like mine).


Mazama, if I had to guess, I'd say you wear a 39/40 sleeve on your dress shirts?

It's 68CM. It was designed for more of an upright position (since I am not an aggressive rider) And yes, long-sleeved dress shirts and coats are hard-to-find.

Not to rain on your parade, I called Co-Motion around the first of the year about a Mazama and they told me it had been discontinued. You might want to call and confirm.

haha, thanks for the info Mazama, that's a crazy huge ride! I'm 6'5, 300lbs at the moment, and have been riding a 62cm Kona Jake which fits me pretty well. I'm all torso, with regular people sized legs (33" inseam). The Jake has a fairly long top tube at 61.3cm, but I have zero standover clearance on it (have to be careful dismounting!).

It's not something i'm looking at immediately, but when I'm ready for a more serious road bike, I'll look at this one very hard. Right now the Jake is rigged up with fenders and a rack for commuting. It'd be nice to have a recreational road bike :).

You owe me a keyboard:lol: I just blew my tea all over my desk, keyboard and monitor after seeing the mental image of Mazama as a human T-rex.

Maz is an across the state neighbor of mine and I'm hoping to one day see his bike in person. I've sent the pictures of his bike to my favorite LBS just so they could marvel at it too.

I recently met a guy on a Co-Motion touring rig and it was beautiful. Great welds and paint. He had the bike for 3 years and had 28K miles on it. Told me this would be the last bike he ever bought as it was so well crafted
