I got a new set of Sugino Alloy chainring bolts, but 2 out of the 5 are spinning at max tension. So is riding this way harmless or dangerous? I'm noticing a lot of creaking when I'm pushing hard on the pedals. Please advise!

I can't count the number of alloy chainring bolts I've broken over the years. Creaking is not good. If 2 are spinning, they aren't tight enough, and they are prime candidates for breakage. Personally, I would replace them with steel.

sounds like they are too long. there are different size chainring bolts. you need track specific joints. i would'nt ride like that

You'll need that park tool or a chisel to grip the backside of the bolt so it doesn't spin around when you tighten it.

I just assumed that because they are Sugino bolts, they are the correct length, but the above comment about length is spot on. Check that out first, then try the correct tool to grip the back.

PS...once you get the correct size bolts, put some locktite/ anti-seize on the threads. also throw a little grease around the bolts and where the chainring meets the arms. this will eliminate and squeaking.

That much I know. I'm not sure what to do. 3 out of the 5 are perfectly fine and screwed on tight. The last 2 will spin no matter what (tightened w/ 2 prong thing on the back).

I had a similar situation with sugino 75 cranks and a salsa chainring - the bolts were slightly too long for the recessed bolt holes. I filed a tiny bit of metal off the female half of the bolt and everything was fine.
