Touring - companion(s) wtd oregon tour sept 08

I dont know if i can post a companion wanted on this thread but here goes. male from san jose CA age 40 seeking companion(s) for a short 9 or 10 day tour from eugene Oregon to San Francisico CA down pacific coast bike route in early sept 2008. taking amtrak from SF to eugene and riding home . medium pace, 45-70 miles day. light camping ( I have a solo tent and a spare tent) and cooking. eating at restaurants, stopping at brewpubs, coffee houses, enjoying the days are what to expect. I'll be going down the 101 in the middle of September. I start in Canada Sept 1st and I'm riding the 101 to Eureka, then over to Tahoe, and down to Mexico.

Are you planning on riding hwy 299 east from hwy 101? If you are coming south and then heading east you will miss Eureka by about 12/14. Hwy 299 is a challenge with big hills and blind turns and not always a safe escape route. I've been tempted but never tried it yet. Your trip sound like a blast and I hope you bust it out.

Thanks for the words of encouragement (Sorry to jack your thread Ted), I'm actually going to bypass the 299 and head over from Fortuna, then to Lassen, then Truckee. Although I will be on the 299 from Lewiston to Redding. Any advice? ;p

That means you will be taking hwy 36 unless you are on logging roads and it is even more knarley than 299. The sight lines on 36 are worse than 299 and when I was doing construction a lot of the drivers were nascar wannabees and drove that way. I would love to ride 299 or 36, super views and pretty trees on the rivers but I would be very careful of the drivers.

I have never ridden either roads on a bike and I am only speaking as a driver. A lot of 36 would be safe but the choke points where the road is really twisty and has redwood/fir trees that block your view are many.

Your trip sounds like a lot of fun and I am jealous somewhat. The mountains/hills would be a real challange for me but fun nevertheless.

I was planning on taking route 126 which is a straight shot from Eureka to the coast, I have read on the web that people have biked it, but its rather busy with cars. doesnt seem to have many big hills though. The train gets to eugene at about 1 pm. its 40 some miles to the coast, so I believe I can make it before sundown (my plan anyway). do any cyclists have any advice for getting form eugene to the coast?
