I have 2 friends that will ride around town, anytime I mention going them going with me on my daily ride . They disappear:innocent:My daily ride is a 6-8 mile loop I am 15 years older than one, 20 years older than the other I out weigh one by 165# and the other by 100#. I weigh 21 1/2 stones:) so it isn't like they are trying to keep up with Lance

Sounds like you need to find yourself some new friends.
Maybe you dont smell real good or something.
My kids used to ride with me, now I can offer to pay them and there are no takers. I can outride them. Maybe they are afraid a big guys will show them up.
Go solo. Its better to pace yourself. Most of my friends (who ride) are much closer to their ideal weight than I am. I don't even ask.

Samuel Johnson said a man should keep his friendship in constant repair. It's time to find different folks to ride with.

Hey, I've never found anyone that wanted to ride with me either, they go too fast or too slow or it's too hot or it's too cold or something. Don't worry about, just get out and ride and ride.

After all the riding partners and friends I have in cycling over 12 years, this is the only friend tough enough to keep riding with me. All the rest have wussed out, including the ones that said she wouldn't ride for very long!:D
There are lots of sore losers out there. I had a group of friends (150 lbers) that like to race on a ride (Rosarito-Ensenada 5 miles). They all edged me out in the hills so they came up with a plan to fabricate a trophy and pass it along every 6 months to the next winner. The ride day arrived and the plan was set. I trained my arse off then spanked them all on the ride. After 6 consecutive rides, that was the last time they rode with me. It's like they all took their marbles and went home. After that, I'd see them out on rides that we used to do together. I guess I was no longer invited. That's cool! I guess a 220 lb clyde smoking them in the hills was too much to handle! I did ride with one about a year later. He turned around and went home half way up the mtn. He accused me of doing an uphill time trial!:roflmao2:

HEHEHE! I got lucky! When we met she said she was a sissy. We played catch with a softball, I was SHOCKED at the way she threw the ball. Then I saw her pound a racquetball! That's when I said, "I'm keeping this one!":D.........She is far from a sissy, very strong but very feminine too!:thumb:
In 21 years together, only seen her with lipstick 2 times. Little bit of eyeliner and no makeup. Naturally purty IMO! Not bad for a grandma of 6, eh?:D

Cycling can be a very individualized recreation or sport for many people. I always prefer to ride solo so I can travel at my own pace, be it fast or slow, and generally do my own thing. Try not to take it too personally.

Since my work schedule is about 14 hrs off of everyone elses, I pretty much ride solo all the time. I need to make better use of the weekend group ride option though.

At the beginning of the season, I had a riding partner who rode with me 5 days a week. I would always get dropped and he would never slow up or slow his pace to where I could keep up. He would always say "You will one day be able to hang with me, until then expect to get dropped". He really use to piss me off when he would say that. Now that I have got over my winter sluggishness and I now can drop him within the first 4-5 miles or the first hill, he no longer rides with me.
I have even let him set the pace for us, but the fact is he can’t drop me so I no longer feed his ego. So I now ride alone. I use my Garmin 305 virtual partner to push myself. I did see my old riding partner on the route last week though. He had someone that was struggling to keep up with him that was about four bike lengths back. I caught up to him greeted him and asked him why he was dogging the guy out. His response was “He needs to improve so I want to push him till he pukes”. So I just rode off and dropped both of them. I’m not sure which one puked first, but so much for his "King of the road" ego that day…..:thumb:

My wife of 25 years has been a great riding partner since I returned to cycling. She has even accompanied me on my morning commute a few times.

I recently did the STP (Seattle to Portland) bike ride. It is 202 miles. I got two friends to do it with me. We trained for several weeks. They wouldn't even stay with me on the training rides. On the ride they left me like the parsley on a truck stop plate. So I basically rode the who ride by myself. On the second day, same thing.
They kept talking about how great it was to draft. I was thinking, yeah I could have used a little drafting.
Ah well.
I really hate people like that, f'ing d-bag...
It's not just a bike thing. When I was playing chess regularly at local clubs, I had friends who stopped playing casual games with me because I'd allegedly become 'too good' for them. It seems some folks can't stand the thought that someone they know might be better than they are at something.

Did you agree before the ride to ride together? If not, they might have had the understanding they could ride at their own pace.

Hey Beanz and CACycling ... Give it a rest! :deadhorse2:  care to rub it in? kidding kidding! :)
To the OP: you'll find a good group either way in time.. perhaps you can join a club and I'm sure you'll find people faster or equal to ride with. If your hauling it that good you could even get into some racing which will introduce you to more like minded folks. Just keep riding :)

"Riding with someone" works both ways; if you are forcing these friends into a pace they aren't comfortable with, then you can't really blame them for avoiding you. If they could drop you like a hot rock and did so on a regular basis, do you think you would really want to be subjected to that? When I first started riding, I was pretty slow, although that didn't last long. And I became much faster than the people I originally started riding with; now they won't ride with me either, but then again, I don't expect them to. I do ride now with people much faster than me, and since they know I'm working my hardest to stay with them and that I enjoy the suffering, they let me tag along. So you might want to try taking it easier on your friends or seek out faster company.

I ride by myself and use my heart rate monitor as my riding partner. Now I recently purchased a Garmin Forerunner 305, so I can fingure out how to use it as a partner.
When I tell people I am going out for a short ride, I am back in little over an hour with a 20 mile loop. My wife doesn't mind anymore.

I was riding an old ross 5 speed in 2nd gear, pulling that trailer, I'm not fast .I ride to the next town over once in a while and average less than 15mph (12miles) I just find it amusing both friends are actually close to what you are suppose to weigh for you height and younger than me and don't think they can do 10-12 miles. And Here I am getting real close to 50, 90-100#over idea weight and don't think twice about riding that distance. If they could get the "I can't do it" out of there heads I would most likely have trouble keeping up with then.
I am just an over weight hillbilly with a I can do this attitude I get there by aiming for the next road, my friends are held back by their I can't do that attitude even though they are in better shape than me

I see what you mean, plumberroy! Different strokes for different folks (did I just sound like Stormcrowe there, or what?)! Many people have mental blocks about what is possible on the bike; maybe you can help your friends past this by telling them you'll have the food and water they might need to make it past ten miles!

Time for new friends.
You can still keep these two but I'd suggest looking into what bike clubs are in your area.
Many clubs offer B and C rides which allows new riders to improve at their own speed while enjoying the company of other riders (yeah,it's infectous)

Yeah, no one wants to ride with me, either. But then, its because I'm a dick ...
No seriously, I have always had good luck at the Sat/Sun AM local bike club ride. The hardest thing is to find someone your own ability and you have a better chance if finding that person in a larger group of cyclists.
If that doesn't work, go take a Dale Carnegie course on how to win friends ...

Getting this thread back to where it started, it's probably simple, neither one wants to get their ass kicked by a fat, old fart. I probably wouldn't have either when young and skinny, now as the fat, old fart myself, I would rather enjoy it:D

We did several training rides. Basically I could tell that riding together was going to be tough. But we still said on the day of the ride that we would try to meet up at the stops.
the faster guy really just has no discipline. If someone passes him he will speed after them. that isn't really my idea of how to do a 200 mile ride. but I still didn't want to ride the whole thing by myself.
After the ride he mentioned how suprised he was to see people waiting at the top of hills. I explained they were waiting for others in their group. (the hills will space you out). He just really has no idea.
On our traiing rides we tried riding in a 3 man paceline. Everytime he got to the front he would speed up a couple mph. (and drop me off the back)
On the final hill into Portland he was telling the other guy "attack the hill", I am thinking "why".
There are different speeds but there are also different styles. I planned my ride and rode my plan. But I would have liked to have had a little company.

the Garmin 305 is really great. The virtual partner is a great way to race yourself. I call it racing YesterDave.
It has helped me set new eprsonal bests. I have a long flat section (5.5 miles) with few landmarks. So it helps me know when to push it.
