Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Back pedaling break - anyone with overwiew?

Hi all,

I experience severe problems with my knee while (and after) riding fixed. Thus I am going to reinstall a break. Some month ago, I started with a front break but removed it.

Now I am wondering if there is a back pedaling break which does not mean installing a huge and ugly hub. Is there a hub that is alike my current fixed sprocket and hub?

Your fixed gear hub is already a "back-pedalling brake". If you mean coaster brake, then no - as that would requier a "huge & ugly hub".

Yes, I was experiencing some knee pain recently, so I moved my seatpost down a tiny bit (I was too high and over extending on one leg, I must have uneven legs). I also tweaked my cleat position on my shoes slightly (they had got uneven) which might've helped.

Chances are your pain is either from mashing too big a gear in a bad fit. Fix your fit, gear down if you have to, and install a brake anyway.

Disks require certain braze ons you probably don't have. A front brake and careful attention to bike fit will help anyone's knees.

Also, if you're going to fit any sort of brake with a cable, fit a front brake. It'll work better, AND clog up the looks of your bike less.

In response to the OP, there are some pretty coaster brake hubs out there, and someone was even working on a Velosteel group buy somewhere on these boards. Kogswell has a pretty spread on these hubs here (http://kogswell.com/siteVELOSTEEL.php), though I don't think Kogswell has them in stock. On the off chance that you're somewhere in Europe, buying one of these might be fairly easy and inexpensive.

Still, I'm inclined to agree with others that a front brake makes a lot more sense. This is by far the best stopping power, and it's very kind to your knees.
