Southwest - Crazy? Burning Man by bike? anyone done it?

I am very seriously thinking of going to Burning Man 09 (next year) by bike and was wondering if anyone else had done it? I have been to the event SEVERAL times in various vehicles. So yes, I do know what to expect as far as the climate and the route. Any information you have from personal experience, traveling by bicycle, would be useful.

Huh? Are you asking about the road to Gerlach? I`m not a burner, so maybe there`s some other obvious problem you`re wondering about. The most direct bikeable route from Reno to Gerlach is Pyramid Highway to Sutcliff, turn right and follow the shore of Pyramid Lake around (what-ever route number), at Nixon turn North on the Gerlach highway and follow it all the way. Reno to Gerlach is almost exactly 100 mi by that route (depending on where in Reno you start from). B.R. City is what, 15 miles from there? Services available just before Sutcliff, in Nixon, then in Empire. Need to decide yourself if that`s within your capability. Is that what you were asking?

EDIT: It`d probably be shorter and definitely be more pleasant to ride in from Cedarville. CA. Take a look at it on a map- part of the road might show up on an older map as dirt, but it`s been paved for 10 or 15 years now. It isn`t as desolate looking as the Nixon to Gerlach stretch- a few little swampy ponds and pretty canyons to break up the dry parts.

Just wanted to say thanks for the tip. Checked out the route on a map and it looks doable.

Also, while folks there are generally pretty charitable, you are expected to have supplies on hand for your entire stay. You could probably get away with a lighter load, but I still wouldn't plan on it.

Yeah I know, been going since 96 (I AM burnier than most!) I'm getting in touch with DPW and Center Camp Cafe to see about volunteering in exchange for meals.

Scruffy, I`ve caught a few of your posts on the touring subforum reguarding this trip- looks like a hell of an adventure! When are you taking off? Don`t forget to drop a line when you get in the neighborhood. There`ll be a shower and a bed waiting if you want it.

I'm in the process of getting rid of a lot of my "STUFF" I'm amazed just how much I've managed to cram into a 1 bedroom over the years... It's going pretty well, actually got rid of some big-ticket items recently and paid off the credit cards! (YEAH YIPPEE YAHOO!) I should be outta here by April as planned possibly sooner. I'm mostly waiting on the weather and my yard sales at this point. There really is nothing holding me here in Key West and 10 years has certainly been long enuff!
