I have a set of Mavic Open Sport rims, which are 622 x 15mm. How do I know what the maximum width tire is that I can use with them? I have 28s and 32s to choose from. Will the 32s be too large, is there some sort of rule for how big you can go without having problems?

The chart says 28c is as big as you should go. When you go larger, you do get some vagueness in the handling.

Btw, most bikes with Open Pros won't take a 32c, and most won't take a 28c, either. The Rivendell 27c will sometimes squeeze in and it's a great tire.

I ran some of those really nifty rivendel multicolored tires with open pros, no prob.

These were the tires I ran on my open pro's:

"Ruffy Tuffy Speedblend tire 700x28 " http://www.rivbike.com/#product=10-054

32's might have been pushing it a bit, and wouldn't have fit that bike anyways (the Ruffy tuffys barely cleared the stays).

How many spokes?

I run Vittoria Randonneur Pro 700x32's on my Open Pros. No problems at all with the tires but the light duty rack flexes quite a bit when I'm trying to carry more than 30 lbs. I'm sure the 32 hole Ultegra Open Pros with 14/15 gauge butted spokes are contributing some flex as well.
