Northern California - Glass in Sacramento County Bike Lanes

County government here apparently believes street-cleaning is passé or a waste of taxpayer money. I'm sick and tired of riding through glass. I took a broom to the westbound bike lane on Arden leading up the hill to Fair Oaks Blvd. because I ride up that hill frequently. I didn't get all the glass before I got an emergency call and had to leave. But this is pathetic: cyclists sweeping bike lanes in other people's neighborhoods. (I guarantee the remaining glass will still be there until I sweep it away.) Please, everybody who uses bike lanes in unincorporated areas of Sac County, call the Supes and complain. Refer to specific streets if you can. With gasoline prices fueling conservation, with so many people switching from cars to bikes, now is the time to push elected officials for better and cleaner bike lanes.

In Fairfield, when we see glass on the bike trail or streets, a phone call to Public Works takes care of it. They say they just need to be made aware of it. Try a call to the Sac county road dept next time. They also might just need to be informed.

UPDATE: The glass I referred to in my OP is still there, as I predicted. I've called these same people about two other spots with glass on the road, to no avail. The call-and-report sytem isn't working in my burgh.

In Antioch, when we see a section of road or bike path without broken glass we write a thank you note to the city, the local newspaper, take photos and have a special religious ceremony.

Like special butterflies that live only beautiful seconds before their demise, glass free pavement is a wonderful, though ephemeral thing here.

Sing it, cccorlew. I only recently returned to the saddle after a 24-year hiatus. I lived in Davis back then, where the drivers and local government took care of cyclists. After moving to Sacramento, and until I got back on a bike, I didn't pay any attention to bike lane conditions—which streets they were on, how wide they were, how cracked the pavement was, the presence of glass, whether parked cars or foliage were allowed to block the way. I pay attention now. And while I haven't gotten the, ahem, customer service I wanted from my county government, I won't stop pestering the people in the Transportation Dept. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. And who knows—increased demand might affect the supply side some day.
