I'm trying to gauge whether someone saw an opportunity for a free ride or if they cut through a lock to get it.

Naw, man.
I'm sorry for your loss. I instantly went to CL & ebay looking for it. I figured if someone just picked it up outside a store maybe they took it for a joyride & then dropped it somewhere.
But if they cut thru a lock, then they either will sell it whole, for parts, or tape it up & ride it.
I hope you get it back, but can you tell us the complete story?

Good luck getting it back. I had a very similar Panasonic like that back in the 80's, same colour and graphics. What year is that frame?

Wait... Was this locked up in chinatown last week? I saw this and thought to myself, that's too pretty of a bike to be locked up overnight in the street... We were riding to the banks. Saw the Sheriff Stars from a block away. It's gotta be the same bike. Beautiful...
I'll post it on the nyc boards for you...

please post this up wherever you can. it's a pretty noticeable bike.
again, if anyone sees this bike please throw a lock on it & call me.

Why did you lock it up overnight? And why weren't the wheels locked? When I saw it, it was locked to the top tube to a sign post along a busy street...
Not trying to rub it in, just lock it up better when you get it back.

harsh!!! i live in the LES / Chinatown area, will definitely let you know if i ever see this bike on the streets.
whenever i come across a really nice bike locked up, i really want to admire it but then i think to myself maybe the owner is watching me thinking i'm up to no good.

two kryptonite u-locks.
one short, one long.

I feel the same way.
I'm also not feeling so confident in my u-locks anymore, even though I never leave it locked up for more than 30 minutes.
Hope you get your bike back. It's a nice looking ride.

what kind of kryptonite locks? any evidence of how they were busted? sawed or maybe broken with a hydraulic jack?

2am, leaving a bike alone in the dark in NYC. Need not say anything more. I do hope you get your bike back for it is a sad loss. To the person who stole this bike, may you suffer a bad case of crotch crickets. You also deserve to be run over by a 18 wheeler attempting to do skids on your back!

i always think about how upset i would be if i crashed and wrecked my frame. but i think getting it stolen would be way way worse. ugh.
have you went around to bike shops and stuff to let them know? maybe some shady dude brought it in and tried to sell it to trackstar or that new japanese shop which has consignment...

I'm confused. You never leave it out at night but it was stolen around 2 AM, with a small ulock, not the aforementioned two ulocks?
Was it lifted from your domicile or out front of a bar? Did you have it locked up to something or did they take bike and lock as one?
is there such thing as bicycle ins? if so, i better have mine insured for 1/2 million$ to be safe..

You can get anything insured. You can get insurance for a body part.

he may be confused, but i am curious about the circumstances of your theft, because i trust a kryptonite U in nyc daily. it had been my impression that a first rate lock is virtually never defeated, and that almost all thefts are due to inferior locks and locking strategy, or simple forgetfulness and various mistakes on the part of the bike owner.
so please, could you answer, what sort of kryptonite lock was it? a mini, a NY fahgeddaboudit? both? was it broken?
do you think your lock was sawed with a portable electric saw?

Really sorry to hear, as [almost] everyone else has said. I don't recommend two U-locks to do the job, 'cause they both can be (with great difficulty) defeated with the same tool. Try using Chain and U-Lock (Like the Faggetaboutit Chain or U-Lock) or thick cable with integrated lock for the front wheel and Faggetaboutit U-lock for the rear, frame and bike post.
Hang in there and keep an eye out on New York CLs

Oh, this needs sigging.
OP, that sucks. Hope you get it or get a new one...

By your lack of clarity in a response, should we assume that the theft of the bike was your fault. Left outside, poorly locked?

u-lock security is another thread altogether. i'm just trying to get the word out. i consider myself partly to blame for this because i usually always lock my bike in a place that a bike thief would have a hard time clipping through a fat short u-lock. this time however i had no choice. other than now, i have never had any problems with my locks. i use the fattest ones available, one short, one long.

no choice but to what? not use the locks at all? i dont understand why it is such a secret which model locks you use or if you used them at all.

Yeah, seems this guy might usually lock it up... but didn't this time?
Confusing.
