Foo - Pennies

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

How many pennies are you carrying with you on your bike?
I counted 5. I removed them so that I wouldn't be carrying all that excess weight. I could even feel myself riding faster!

None.
When I stop mid-ride for YooHoo and Twinkies, if I get a penny or two in change, I drop them in the little "Leave a Penny" dish by the cash register. Nickels, dimes, quarters, half-dollars and dollar coins (Sacagawea or Susan B.) I'll carry with me, but pennies just aren't worth the weight.

The smallest denomination here is 5c, so none. They stopped making 1c and 2c pieces here when they figured out it was costing more to make them than they were worth.

I actually make a point of carrying some of those plastic $5 notes that they make out here on my longer rides. One never knows when one of those might come in handy (i.e. a split side-wall on a tyre). I started doing this after a friend of mine found $50 in the surf one morning.
As far as 5c coins go - none. I've actually found something more useful to do with my small change.

One day while commuting to work it seemed a real struggle at first. I assumed that I just hadn't had enough sleep or enough breakfast. After a few minutes I began to worry that I had a brake pad rubbing, but a quick inspection proved that this was not the case.
It was only after changing clothes that I found the pocket lint.

The Canadian government figured out the same thing over twenty years ago, but they still keep making the useless one cent coin, with the ugly British queen on it I should add. During the cycling season I tend to collect a pile of change due to the fact I am not taking public transportation, and I am still trying to get rid of all the small coins I colected, as the banks won't take them! I hate the one cent coin!

Sticky-taping a few of 'em together and slingshotting them at recalcitrant drivers?

Now there's a thought! Only problem is I'd be out of change before the half-way point of just one commute.

Are they actually plastic?

Are they actually plastic?
Indeed they are. Very useful if you get a split sidewall in your tyre while riding. After all, if they can float along in the surf for God knows how long, they must be OK.

Yep. All our foldin' money is. As well as being good for impromptu tyre repair, they don't get wrecked in the wash, they're virtually untearable, extremely difficult to counterfeit, and you can shrink them in the oven like you used to be able to do with chip packets (don't know if you still can now they've gone to foil).

Geez, you must be one wealthy man if you can afford to do that! Are you handing out loans by any chance? ;)

Little known fact about Steele-Bike...
For the past 15 years, I removed every penny from my change and placed it in a glass 5 gallon jug.
Let's just say that I can no longer pick up the jug.

I didn't say I do it myself, just that it can be done.

I do this same practice.
