Classic & Vintage - Trying to identify a repainted bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This is a bike I bought at a yard sale. I know you will want pics. I'll post them as soon as I can. Anyway, here's what I know so far...

It appears to be a rebuilt, mix and match of parts. It is steel. Feels really light though.

The brakes are Shimano 600, and are no doubt replacements. The front hub is a Dura Ace, but the rear is a Sansin (probably original, but not sure). The rims are mis matched Araya, 700c size. The handle bars and crank are Sakae Signature. The stem says "Custom."

There are about 3 sets of numbers stamped on the bottom bracket, plus other numbers and letters stamped at different angles. All the lugs seem to have numbers stamped in, as does the down tube.

The bottom brackets are horizontal, but shorter than most older (80's) bikes. They have bolts for adjusting the rear wheel axle angle (don't know how to properly describe that). The dropouts are stamped "Super Vitus."

I know this is not enough to make an identification, but any tips on how to examine the bike further, or on some of the parts would help. Again, pics will be forthcoming. If there is a way to strip off one layer of paint, let me know ;)

Heres my first pic. I am having trouble with close ups. (The Italian words seem to be the painter's idea of customization. As far as I can tell, they have nothing to do with the bike.)

Hard to say without close ups, but it does look like a decent machine!

Hmmm... not sure if I can get any good pics up:(

My best clue is the "super vitus" marking. Is there a way to find out what manufacturers used this tubing? I know Peugeot did. Any others?

Also, the steering finds its own center. I mean, if you turn the handle bars and let go (while holding the bike off the ground), the wheel snaps back to center. Is there a name for that? Did certain manufacturers make bikes that way?

Thanks!

Here's a pic of where the seat stay attaches to the seat tube. Sorry it's upside down. The bolt there says "simplex."

Could it be this frame:

The description on the velospace page says it is a super vitus frame.

Those "spoony" caps on the seatstays look like those on a Motobecane frame that I have. Mine is an 80s Team Champion. It's Columbus SL tubing rather than Super Vitus, but Motobecane used a lot of different tubesets -- Vitus, Reynolds and Columbus. Does your frame have any holes for a headbadge? If not, then it had a decal or sticker. Late Motos didn't have riveted headbadges, so far as I know.

Plenty of Motobecanes used Super Vitus tubesets of various levels.

I've seen pics of Motobecane Grand Record and Le Champion that both look very similar to this bike. I'm confidently calling this a Motobecane frame. I'm also confident that every other part on the bike has been replaced. :)
