General Cycling Discussion - Handlebar alternatives?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My utility bike is a Schwinn Sierra MTB. No suspension, set up as an Xtracycle, but solid and works well. Right now the bars are about 3 1/2" rise, which puts them about level with the seat, and I have problems with not enough hand positions. The bars are not high enough for an upright spinning position, and too high to drop the hammer; preferably i'd like to be able to do both. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what other bars, etc. I might look into? I'm looking at bar ends, but they don't seem like they would help the positioning issue.

There is several postings on this topic, both in this thread and the "Utility" thread. I had the same problem, old MTB rebuilt to homemade "longtail". I realised that if you get your hands closer to your body (less stretched out) you really do not need them to be higher up. Same level as seat is fine, higher up might bring your shoulders up.
