Well its taken a pile of time but I finally got on line yesterday.

We moved to France from England, October 2003, rented for a few months while we hunted a house and finally moved into the new home 2 weeks ago

Couldn't get on line till I had a land-line phone.

Couldn't get a land-line phone until we'd bought a house (the rented gite had no phones)

Couldn't buy a house until a whole pile of other "merde" was out of the way.

Now I have to hunt down the local cycling club and get some long rides in.

Hey Stew,

Why the move? Just curious if it was job transfer, school, or forced emigration.

Hey Stew,

Why the move? Just curious if it was job transfer, school, or forced emigration.

A bit of all of that really. I was a computer programmer, working on contract basis. Work was getting harder and harder to find. Aged 42 i was a bit tired of having to learn a new language every 2 years just to stay in the game. So the plan was to reskill as a plumber and move to a part of the UK where housing was cheaper and we didn't need a huge mortgage.

Then we figured, if we're going to make the kids change school, and move away from our friends, we may as well make it a big move.

We chose France because the weather in the south is good, and French schools and health service are excellent.

Turns out half of England has moved to France - there are 6 English kids in the school down the road.

And there are always plenty of people out cycling, even in winter and grim weather you see guys training. Here in the south west, cyclo-cross is very big.

A friend of mine, retired from the Royal Navy and government, service, decided to move to France, too. He remarked on the same thing, more expatriot Englishmen than Frenchmen in some places.

The south of France sounds like a great place to cycle. I believe that is where Lance Armstrong lived and trained for a while, at least during the season.
