Another reason to try and be safe out there and try to find safe roads for your ride. On our way back to Davis from Winters today, we came upon a horrific accident on Rd 31 (Covell Blvd) between Rd 98(Pedrick) and Rd 96 (Stevenson Bridge). A man was struck by a Mini Van. I Pulled my first aid kit out of my car but when I came up on the scene, the only thing that would help was the blanket I had in the car to cover his body to give him some decency. When the paramedics arrived, they attempted CPR for about a minute followed by an attempted with the defibrillator after which they recovered him with their blanket. This is about the time we left as we could no longer be of help. I did not see the accident so I cannot pass blame. I just wish everyone that reads this prays and wishes good will to the family of the downed cyclist. Pass this on to whatever list you wish as a warning to be safe if you deem it appropriate.

That's pretty traumatic for you, I/(we) hope you'll be ok. Have a shot of J.D. or two before bed tonight and think good thoughts man. There's nothing else you could have done...
Peace...Pete
What an awful thing to come upon Huy. Don't be feeling guilty about anything, there wasn't a thing you could do.

Sorry to hear. I rode that way this morning on my way out to Cantelow. Second time this year someone's been hit & killed on the roads I ride regularly.
I thought Yolo County was safe for bicyclists.

Call it confirmed. He wasn't carrying ID and at last report remains unidentified. Sad. Driver stated the cyclist turned from the narrow shoulder into traffic and he had no time to react
I wish drivers would pass a cyclist with the same respect they pass other vehicles. There would likely be less reports like this. No one passes SUVs with 6 inches to spare.

The cyclist has no story to tell because he's gone. The motorist can say whatever they like.
Again.

From the Woodland Daily Democrat:
1 dies in van-bicycle crash
By Democrat staff
Article Created: 07/20/2008 08:17:14 AM PDT
A bicyclist was killed on County Road 31 near Davis after a van crashed into it near the side of the road.
The bicyclist's identity is unknown, California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Garside said at the scene. Garside declined to give out the name of the driver, from Woodland, citing the pending investigation.
The man had been traveling westbound at about 11:50 a.m., on a black Schwinn bicycle along CR-31, west of CR-97. The driver, in a light blue-gray 1998 Ford Windstar, was also going westbound at about 55 mph, according to the driver's statement.
The driver, 37, stated the bicyclist turned from the narrow shoulder and into traffic. He stated he was unable to stop in time and struck the bicyclist. Damage to the van showed the bicyclist was fully ejected from the bike, crashing into and destroying the van's windshield before landing on the shoulder. He died at the scene.
The man had no identifying information inside his fanny pack, and he had no wallet, Garside said. No other identifying details were released.
Covell Boulevard has a bike lane until it reaches the end of Davis' city limits, when the road becomes CR-31.
