Advocacy & Safety - Cycling/Pedestrian friendly communities.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Atbman’s thread on highway design has reminded me of only two communities that I am aware of that are car free. One is Victoria Beach, located on Lake Winnipeg here in Manitoba, Canada and the other is the infamous Christiana, located in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Are there any others out there?

I believe Rottnest Island, somewhere near Perth is carfree. And I did get to ride on Maria Island (off the coast of Tasmania) which has no cars. Mind you, Maria Island has no shops or electricity either.

>Mackinac Island

The bike traffic there is as bad as car traffic in Chicago, worse really. No one follows any kind of rules.

Davis California prides itself on its accomodation to bicyclists. Even though there is much more car traffic than bike traffic, there are many bike lanes and the drivers are universally respectful to us two wheeled types. It is also nice that Amtrak stops in the middle of this pleasant town. The only down side is that the biggest hill for miles is a speed bump. Real Califonia hills are a quick 12 miles away, though, on a road that takes one into the Napa Valley.

Mackinac Island is a beautiful tourist mecca. Maybe when you get out of town it is less congested.
You expect tourists to keep an eye on cyclists when they are too busy eating taffy and fudge.
Think the island has a paved road all the way about it..Think there an organized bike ride about Labor Day. If you had bike lanes to keep tourists out, the meandering of the tourist hordes would still be impossible to control...
Did any bike outside of the village.?
