My 6-year old son did his first tri today and won the 5-6 age division :D
16th in the water (just like Dad, there), 6th in the run, 1st on the bike (by 2:00). He averaged 10.8mph on his MTB, and the next closest was 9.7mph. Smokin' <--root beer ;)
On the bike, he was chasing the lead moto all the way. Great sight there. Really just rode away from everyone. It seemed like they had closed the course behind him or something when we were waiting for the next bike.
Brings a tear to my eye.

Congrats to WR JR. I didn't even know they had age groups that young in tri. I knew BMX went that young, but not tri.

It's the genes. In 10 years Taylor Phinney will be his b1tch. Congrats to you and your son.

Rockin' a steel bike with heavy wheels, too. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. ;)

Do you have him doing WR Intervals?

No, Mrs. Rockets is actually responsible for the training. She goes on several 5 mile runs during the week, and he follows. Even more impressive, his 4-year-old sister follows (off training wheels). If she was old enough, I think she'd have gotten 2nd in this race ;)

I'm not sure whether I should feel deficient in my parenting or....:)
(2 of my kids go to the same elementary school as Lance's kids and I bet the school would create a cycling class of some type if enough parents indicated interest...bike repair for kiddos??)

Yeah, Kevin Livingston's daughter is the same age as WRJR here and they go to school together. My wife organized a huge bike festival, and Kevin was an amazing help. He got us all kinds of handouts from BSS and the Tour of Georgia, and he led group rides to the Veloway. I think we had 200+ kids with their families. I ran a workstand to do tune-ups, there was a rodeo, a couple bike cops had a booth, it was awesome.
The week of the festival, they promoted biking to school, and they had to bring in triathlon racks to hold all the bikes that came in that week. They had like 5x as many bikes as racks, and now the principal is ordering a bunch more racks to be installed permanently. It was really something (Kevin got us those tri racks from a local promoter too).
You should totally get Lance involved in something there.

Looks like some wind tunnel time is in order tbh.
In all seriousness, thats cool. I work with kids (climbing instructor) and if half the kids were as active and enthusiastic as yours my job would be a hell of a lot easier.
