Tandem Cycling - Best brake pad replacement for Avid Single Digit 7's

First of all, thank you to bikeforums.net for maintaining such a great resource on the web. I am new to this forum and have found the tandem information very useful.

My wife and I ride a 2001 Santana Visa in the DC area. We have been extremely pleased with the bike. It has allowed us to do everything from centuries to dirt bike paths without any problems.

I need to replace all the brake pads and am considering the cartridge style Kool Stop's in the salmon compound. I am under the impression that these cartridges will slip into the original Avid Single Digit V-brake holders. I also have the impression these will be a superior setup to what we have. Currently, we are using the regular Kool Stop (black compound) all-in-one pads. Although they don't squeal as the original Avid pads did, they weren't an improvement in stopping power.

Has anyone found these to be good or have found a better pad? Normally, I'd just get these and forget about it but I am in the mood to nitpick something!

The salmon (Scott Mathauser compound) colored pads are a good choice; however, the dual compound (black/salmon), aka. MTB All-Weather, Thinline Dual-Compound might be a better choice.

Word on the street is, they come on more smoothly than the very grippy all-salmon pads but otherwise still deliver the same great all-weather stopping power that the salmon pads are reknown for.

We agree with Mark: Scott/Matthauser pads are the best we've used. Put 50,000 miles on a set of S/M pads on the rear of the tandem! A bit pricier, but worth it in the long run!

Thank you for the suggestions! From what I have read, the salmon compound on the Kool Stops is the Scott/Matthauser compound. The salmon/black combo sounds like the way to go and they look sharp.
