Hi,
This is my first post. I ran 2 years of xcountry in high school. I have rowed 4 years in college and still run a lot, usually about 24 miles a week right now. I love running places, with my runs typically distances of 6-10 miles that I normally go on after working 8-9 hours 5 days a week. I am interested in cycling as it seems like a good move from running due to the wear and tear on my knees. I am 22 and would consider my self in pretty good condition right now. My knees are still pretty good but its still a concern sometimes.
I was considering saving up for a racing shell to row on my own, as i really love rowing but there are some draw backs:
1) they are expensive. New goes for about 8k, used hold their value well.
2)I don't have a place at home to store a shell
3)I don't want to pay extra money to store at the Shell house
4) the shell house has limited hours, especially off season (mid nov-feb....mid june-sept) and i typically run/exercise after work anymore, around 7-9pm...sometimes later.
5)I bought a kayak last summer, and i use it to fish, but find it inconvenient for a daily/bi-daily activity and a shell would be similar in practice
With that in mind, I have always found the tour de france an absolute blast to watch. I ride my middle school 20" Haro BMX bike to crew practice a lot and overall I just find cycling something I could easily get into without much difficulty.
I am going to start shopping and looking around this week for a bike. I realize this thread has been all over the place, but the main reason is I would be looking for someone/some group to ride with, show me the ropes, train with and such. I wouldn't mind training with the intention on racing within the next year. I have often seen several riders on what I would assume is a group ride lapping Cooper River. I live close to there and am hoping by some freak chance maybe someone else on the board rides in this area. Sorry for the lengthy post. Its late and my thoughts scattered.
