I have just bought my first raceing bike. and for a test drive i went about 7 miles. But just before i was due to turn round i had a puncture. the strange thing is i couldn't see any glass or thorns where it happened and checked the tires for grebs but nothing going

do racing bikes - with the thinner tires puncture more easily . What sorts of things can cause this? and what can i do to prevent this?

was it just bad luck?

Racing tires or Road Bikes do not puncture easily.

Bike tires don't puncture easily. However, when I took by new road bike out for a few spins I had a flat on the front and rear within a week. I did some research and they say it can happen due to how it is put on the rim etc. getting pinched or whatever. When I replaced the tubes I used slime filled for punture sealing of thorns. I have not had a flat since that first week and have had for over a year.

Perhaps you had a pinch flat? If you are concerned about the potential for flatting, you might consider running heavy-duty puncture resistant tubes.

Did you buy a road bike or mountain bike? This thread says mountain bike, your other thread says road bike. There is no need to post in two forums - your question will be seen by almost all who can answer it by posting it once in a single forum.

Road tires do not flat particularly easily, though it depends on the tire. Some tires have weak casings and will be suseptible to debris punctures. If it's a road bike you're talking about and you do have problems with flats in the longer term, change out to a stronger tire such as a Specialized Armadillo or try and look ahead and avoid debris on the road/path. I've had two flats in the last two weeks on my road bike, all from thorns - I have not been impressed with the tires' ability to resist punctures, so will probably try something else soon Fortunately, both flats happened within a mile from home so I was able to get enough air in the tire to get home and then change and repair the tube in the comfort of my loungeroom. :D

If it's a mountain bike, use thorn resistant tubes to avoid thorn and other debris punctures, or if you don't want so much added weight try slime filled tubes which make fixing a flat a very simple "spin and reinflate" affair.

Could well have been a pinch flat - caused mainly by underinflation. Check your tire pressures before each ride to ensure they're inflated enough.

was it just bad luck? For all who say road tires do not puncture easily, the REAL answer is: IT DEPENDS, on the tire and what you are running over! Some tires ae almost bulletproof, and others have almost no puncture resistance.Glass and thorns are especially evil, and can often be invisible when imbedded in a tire. You could also have pinch flatted, which can be caused by too little pressure. You could also have a defective rim strip or a burr on the insife of the rim causing problems. Only you can diagnose the real problem and the cure.

If you're comparing mountainbike and roadbikes then yes I would agree roadbikes puntures easily. The reason being mountainbike has bigger tires and thicker walls, same goes for the tube.

What you need to do is becareful where you ride, try your best to avoid road shoulders where you see lots of debri esp glass, and keep your pressure to the recommended allowance or you'll be prone to pinchflats.

I notice the way you fix your tube is inportant too, if mount improperly you'll get flats easily too.

And always clean your tire, whenever you take a break spend a lil time checkin your tire if anything nasty is sticky on the surface.

Do you have the tape inside the tire its a must.
