General Cycling Discussion - Bicycle related TV shows.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
The only I can think of right off is Pacific Blue. Were there ever any more? Also was there a Seinfeld episode that ever focused on his green Klein mtn bike hanging in his apt.? Or was it just a prop.?

It was a geniune Klein. Jerry doesn't ride but Kramer does in real life is apparently a bonafide Klein-Fanatic, hence the Klein seen on the set. After the series ended Seinfeld auctioned his Klein from the show on Ebay.
Klein gave all the cast members a Klein as well.

Lately there has been a bike safety show showing every other day on KPBS(public station). They talk about how to signal, turn, how to ride in the street etc.

There was a short-lived half-hour sitcom about a bike messenger service. This was probably the mid to late 80s. I thought it was called "Quicksilver," like the Kevin Bacon movie, but can't find any reference to it in a brief websearch.
I doubt that the show lasted a full season. As I recall, it sucked.
"Breaking Away" was also a one season sitcom that ran in 1980. Shaun Cassidy starred as Dave Stohler.

I think I remember that show. It had the guy who played Eldon on Murphy Brown. And yes indeed, did it suck.
As for current shows, I notice that on "Arrested Development," Michael rides an older road bike (a Peugeot, perhaps?), often in a shirt and tie. I dig that.

Characters in the show Dark Angel worked as bike messengers in post-societal-collapse Seattle.

Watch earlier episodes with said bike...the front fork was installed backwards
There was that show about the mountain bike cops in Santa Monica. It was actually kind of fun to watch, if dopey. The stunts were all done by Hans Rey and his guys. What was funny were the chases- no matter who they were chasing (on their bikes) they could never catch them! A guy is RUNNING and they can't catch up to him, and once it was a guy in a wheelchair. And even while chasing, they'd have time to do cool stunts. Then, when they'd crash, they'd get up without a scratch. AFter one crash, the cop goes "Ow!" and looks at his elbow which looked perfectly fine. I thought, gee, at least you could bleed! No one ever had helmet hair. It was full of all kinds of improbabilities, but in spite of that, it really wasn't that bad.

I was surprised one day to see on television an ad for River City Bicycles here in Portland. I was surprised because, while Portland is considered one of the Bike Meccas in the U.S., I have never seen so much as a news feature or forum pertaining to cycling on television here. I've always found that odd.

On one of the Law and Order shows, there are a lot, the female DA commuted by bike.
Duh.. I didn't see the post about Pacific Blue. (head klonk). It airs in French here under the title "alerte a santa monica."
Sometimes I catch "Drop In", those guys are a hoot. They all look like Wayne and Garth. And those crashes- you can't believe they aren't dead. I remember one guy broke his heels and was later shown in a wheelchair. How the hell do you break your heels? You have to just land slap on them! Those guys are insane.

No joke, dude!
Pee-wee was always about his little red bike. Didn't he sing a song once about it? He was probably one of the biggest bike advocates on television... :D ;)

Which Law and Order show? There are 3, Law and ORder SVU, Law and Order C.I. & the original Law and Order. Which D.A.? Which detectives star in it? That way I can narrow it down. Is the D.A. shown commuting by bike? Is it spoken about in the episode?
Law and Order, in all 3 of it's forms are one of my favorite TV drama shows. I do not recall seeing this episode. I do know that D.A. Jack McCoy rides a motorcycle in the show though.
If I know which more details about it I can probably order it on DVD.

He even made a movie about his bike :D
Not a show, but I've seen an ad recently for Gatorade, which actually shows cyclists! ALong with other athletes, like football players. Maybe some of you have seen it. It seems to air mainly on sports networks. Gee, I guess they've finally realized that cyclists are actually REAL athletes! Not to mention that they are among the biggest consumers of Gatorade. Think of it- football players can only drink it on the sidelines, but cyclists take the stuff with them and guzzle it constantly!

Yeah I've seen it and I don't like it one bit. There is NO way someones's going to get up THAT quickly from an over-the-bars crash.
There's no actual show that I know of, but I occasionally see stories related to cycling/mountain biking on FitTV (another Discovery network).
I agree, about the ad, but it's an AD, and how easy is it to get up from a big tackle? Still, at least they did show cyclists in an actual race which looks relatively realistic. ONce there was this canadian ad for biodiversity, which was so ridiculous. It was obviously supposed to look like 'the future' so it shows this guy riding a bent. However, he was wearing a TT helmet (which looks spacelike and futuristic) and the bent is supposed to be 'alternative transport ' for the future. ALso, the guy riding the bent was obviously a roadie, and in real life would not be riding a bent! The whole ad was just implausible!

LOL I know that... :D Watching the TDF is almost like a Movie tho, they even show reruns.
Good Movie about cycling was American Flyers. Much better than Pee Wee, even had a Team 7/11 and showed real places like Golden Colorado.
I caught a bit of this dumb movie from the late 1970s, about two teenagers who fall in love in Pareee! An american girl (Diane Lane! Who was about 16) and a french boy who seemed like a geek! In one scene, they're in some kind of race where it seems everyone is included- people on dorky old bikes alongside racers, obviously not pros of course. I missed the beginning of the scene so I had no idea what that race was all about.

A Little Romance, with Laurence Olivier.
